There was a moment where Henri managed to keep her voice even, and then she exploded. James had been expecting it from the beginning. It would seem that even he could be surprised from time to time. That was good. It made life more fun. He took off his mask and threw it on the table, letting her vent her rage and frustration. James knew she wasn't mad at him. She was having a lousy night and by this point, he wasn't really taking anything other than getting shot at, personally. He took another sip of his whiskey and gave her a grin.
The tone came out heavily accented. "I don't care about me. I'm more concerned about you dying in something like this, you idiot. I'm not trying to lecture you. I just worry. You know how it goes. If our roles were reversed, you would have torn me several new ones right now. And you would have dumped your whiskey on my bullet wound just to prove a point."
He tapped at his tablet a few times, replaying the footage from his mask, trying to get an ID on the man with the mechanical eye. He managed to pull a partial of his face. It would be enough. James uploaded into the INTERPOL database and started a search. Then he looked back up at Henri, emotions flooding over him in a torrent. Aside from the initial feeling while suiting up, James hadn't allowed himself a chance to feel. Hitting the ground running was nice like that. He stood up and pulled some orange juice out of the fridge and poured her a glass, setting the bottle on the table.
"Drink this. You lost a lot of blood. You'll need to work on replacing it." The tone was gentle, but firm. It implied he'd take no arguments from her. After a few moments, he sat down in the chair again. "Now... While, I would like to ask you how it happened, that's your business and it's up to you to tell me. The main questions I need answered are this: How do I realign your implant? And is there anyway that I can do it here with the tools I have?"

Henri cracked a grin and shook her head. Yes, he was exactly right, especially about the whiskey on the bullet wound. She always would care about him, worry about him too. And there had been a time she would have done whatever he wanted. Maybe if that had happened she wouldn't be the way she was now. But it was no use dwelling on the past, there was no changing it. But that didn't stop the little pang in her chest from thinking about what ifs and could have beens.
She looked over at him, now without his mask and her grin turned into a smile. She'd always loved his eyes. Loved looking into them. They were strangely comforting even when they were full of anger, which there seemed to be less of now. Whatever he was doing with his life nowadays seemed to suit him a lot more. She took the orange juice without question and immediately started to drink it. It wasn't her favorite, but he was right, she had lost a lot of blood. There was no argument to be found there. And the quicker she could get back to normal levels, the quicker she could move on.
At mention of possibly fixing her alignment, she glanced at his tablet. She was quiet for a moment, thinking. Her father had told her not to trust anyone to do this but herself or him. But this was Alexei, even with all his secrets, she still trusted him, at least to keep her alive and able to defend herself. She bit the tip of her thumb while she debated before heaving a sigh.
"If your tablet can access an encrypted signal, it might be possible. But the signal is very weak. You have to be close. And it won't recognize it as a native device so...it might take some doing. Also, do you have neighbors that would complain about noise? Because it's not a fun process. Nor is it painless."

The grin on Henri's face brought back old memories. That was always James' favorite thing about her. He used to enjoy making her smile when they were younger. She seemed to do that less since he had seen her recently. Probably had something to do with being shot. In another lifetime, he might have loved her. But that was another person, back then. There was a pang in his stomach. Pain. Loss. Guilt. He was used to it. James just added her to a list of people he'd failed in the last few years. One of these days, he'd get it all fixed for every one.
James listened to Henri's commentary after her momentary internal debate. He'd used the look enough to know it from afar. "Can it do encrypted signals? Please. How long have you known me? I am sure I can make a work around for the issues."
"I know you like some occasional pain, but drawing fire works better if you dodge. There are much more fun ways to do this sort of thing." James gave a smile. Now was the time to diffuse the situation with some humor. "Take it from me. People shoot at me all the time."
There was a momentary pause, while he considered the question. "As far as the neighbors, I'm not worried. The apartment is sound proofed. Interrogations get rather loud. Tell me what to do."

"Oh, right. I forgot you have all zhe fancy toys. Give me un minute and I'll turn over."
Letting out a small "heh" to James' tip about dodging bullets, Henri started taking off her top. He'd already done the hard part and removed her pants to patch her up. (He'd always enjoyed doing that part anyway.) She tossed it away, leaving her in a black tank top and her underwear. Nothing he hadn't seen her in before and something she had no problem wandering around in normally. Not that it had ever stayed on long when they were younger. But that had been a different time. They were kids, neither of them with the scars they had now.
She rolled over with some difficulty and hiked up her shirt.
"Ok. Once you gain access, it should be a fairly simple process. Zhere are several pieces to zhe implant. You have to move each piece back into alignment. I have zhe hard part. Going only slightly out of phase. So you 'ave to work fast. I can only concentrate for so long. And ignore my screaming. Zhat is the most important part." She grabbed an pillow and laid her head on it, looking over at him. She hated it when someone else did the realigning. She could always monitor her pain and progress when she did it herself, and when her father did it, he was rather ruthless. It always felt like a punishment for her mistakes when he did it. She avoided going to him for help with it whenever she could.
"Oh, one more thing. Take a small break between each piece or I'll pass out and then you won't be able to continue working."

James nodded. "No sense in being who I am if I don't get the fun toys once and awhile." As Henri rolled over, James let his eyes roll over her body. He hadn't seen her in a very long time. He stopped himself as he had a momentary sensation to run his hands over her bare skin. It sounded simple enough, albeit rather painful. The part about her going partially out of phase meant that James couldn't even offer her things for pain without fear of hurting her or worse.
"Okay. Well, you were always a screamer, but I imagine this will be a bit different than usual." His hands traced her spine for a minute, running it down to the band of her underwear." James didn't like this implant one bit. The idea behind it was horrible. It went out of alignment every time she used her powers. He gritted his teeth. James had the strangest feeling that Georges was behind this idea. He'd make sure that Henri could walk again, but there would be a price for failure. The pain fit that description.
There was some slight cursing in Russian as he looked at his pad again. "You have just been shot, darling. You tell me if you need anything more. If you want to take a longer break as I realign it, you let me know. I will try not to hurt you anymore than we need." He had learned to ignore the screaming over the years, but it was a very different sensation when it was someone you knew. He leaned over and kissed her bare back. "Ready when you are."

Letting out a small sigh of contentment, Henri settled in, rather enjoying the soft sensation of his hands tracing her spine. She gathered up the pillows beneath her and clutched them under her chin. She would try and muffle any screams with their plushness. She looked back at Alexei and nodded.
"Ok," she muttered.
"No, wait wait wait!" She took a deep, calming breath and let it out slowly before letting it out and shifting out of phase slightly, the small kiss on her back helping her focus her resolve.
"Ok, now go."
Somewhere, on some subconscious level she knew that it was pointless to try and hold back any screams from the pain. Screaming helped with the pain. But she felt it made her seem weak. Henri knew this was false, and she had no problem screaming her head off when she did it by herself. But with Alexei there, she tried to hold back, but she couldn't even bite the pillow because of her phasing.
She started to sweat and grind her teeth as he got one and then two pieces locked in place. The pain of it was intense, as everything shifted around on the molecular level. She saw bright bursts of white behind the tightly closed lids of her eyes as she gripped the pillows as much as she could. She tried very hard not to move, not to writhe in pain as that would only make things take longer. Then the the pain and the phasing were too much and she let out an ear piercing scream.
"Ok...ok stop!" She panted, trying to catch her breath. She would only allow herself a few moments to rest, knowing the quicker it was over, the faster the pain would stop. She forced herself to take a few deep, shaky, breaths, steeling herself for the next round.
"I'm ready for round two if you are. I just hope I can make zhe neighbors jealous." She smirked at him over her shoulder. She felt like crap and the smirk probably looked more like a grimace, but they both resorted to jokes in the face of pain. But she buried her head in the pillows and disregarded trying to look strong this time. She screamed her head off into the fabric and feathers and felt all the better for it.

James saw her body go rigid as he adjusted the pieces. He knew she was holding back her screams. Probably because Henri didn't want to look weak in front of anyone. Least of all him. James was a little nervous about this entire procedure. He wasn't really much good at anything beyond basic battlefield medicine. Adding the phasing component to this made it a little more complicated. If Henri lost concentration, James could lose a hand or worse, kill her.
When the pieces finally clicked together, she let out an ear piercing scream. He removed his hand and when she became solid, he reached over and grabbed a cloth and wiped her brow. "Hey, stop with the tough act. You want to scream, then scream. There is no judgment here, Henri. Do what you must. We can't afford to play games with this sort of things."
The smirk on her face looked pained as she made the joke about making the neighbors jealous. "You always were good at that particular trick." He gave her a wicked grin. And then they started all over again. At least, he'd convinced her to stop holding back on the screaming. Luckily, the apartment was sound proofed.
