Chaos magic. That explained a thing or two about the kid's power set, not to mention the wild aura around him. It was a rather unstable form of magic, if Kent remembered correctly. Kent realized this would be a good chance for him to teach the kid a lesson about forms of magic. "If you look at the magical signature you and I put out, and then the one left by the bull, you can see that all three of our auras are different. The bull's magic is an early Sumerian. Very old and very different from the type you or I use." He stopped for a second and almost smacked himself in the face. "Can you see magical fields? I always forget not everyone has that power. If not, I can share my magical sight with you for a second. It's pretty neat."
Kent gave Gabe a smile as the people walked past them, without paying attention. "I keep a baffling spell active on a charm I wear on a necklace. It makes me hard to perceive by people I don't want to be seen by. It works kind of like a Chameleon circuit, if you've ever seen Doctor Who. I got tired of having to run off and changing. So I made a magical short cut. I can extend it to you, if you need to change back?"
The question about jokes made Kent smile. "Mostly, in my case at least, it's because I tend to be anti-social and spend more time with my books. Some people have the gift and others don't. I was always gifted with puns though. I don't care what they say. Highest form of humor."
The sorcerer's own stomach growled. He only had a cup of coffee so far. The plan involved going to the museum and then grabbing lunch. "Yeah... Breakfast does sound good. I haven't eaten yet, either." He looked to Gabe again, still in his costume. "Oh, I forgot. You're out of magic. Do you want me to help you with something a little less conspicuous? I can whip up some clothes or just throw a glamour over you, if you want."

Gabe turned to look at whatever Fate was looking at, but there was nothing there. Well, he could sense that his magic had been there, but other than that all he could see was the mess left from that Mega-Bull. He could sense almost a tingling in the air, but no more than that for Fate’s magic and the bull’s magic. In fact, he wasn’t sure if that wasn’t just his own magic, diffuse. ”Well, I can sense if there’s magic nearby, and I can sense what my own magic’s doing but I don’t see anything like that, I don’t think.”
Gabe snorted slightly at the suggestion that he might not have seen Doctor Who. ”No self-respecting nerd hasn’t. And, yeah I’d like that. I think I might try that idea too.” The constant spell would definitely be more useful than his little recognition hampering spell while in costume- it didn’t actually cover him getting out of his costumes for one. And then he remembered how much of his magic was left. “Later,” he added.
Gabe was definitely liking Fate up close and not just from a distance through a screen. That sounded like a pretty good description of him, too. Or at least, to what he claimed; his Grandma was a psychologist and she said telling adults straight off the bat about various nerdy hobbies was not the way to make a good impression.
Gabe raised an eyebrow at Fate’s assertion of his skill with puns. His family had never been too good at that, as far as he knew. Maybe great uncle Pietro had been? But snark seemed to fit him better. There wasn’t pressure to come up with anything consistently to that extent, though it would be pretty cool to be actually good at quips.
Gabe bit his lip and nodded. ”Fresh out.” He paused a second to consider the options. ”I’d rather the clothes, please. I’d still feel weird about walking into a bagel shop with a cloak and galaxy patterns, even if no one else could see it.” He was sure that Fate had to have at least a decent enough taste given what he’d said.

Kent nodded. It fit his suspicions. Not everyone could see magical fields. He'd heard a lot about various forms of magic from other beings he'd encountered. Kent mumbled a quick spell and extended a temporary magical sight to Gabe. The sight would allow him to see the three different types of magic. The orderly patterns of his own magic, the older more wild form of the Bull's magic, and Gabe's own would now be visible. The spell would allow the younger mage to see it, but Kent was unsure if a person's perceptions changed the way they could see the magic.
"This is true. No one in the history of nerdom can say anything unless they've seen it. It's the first test." He extended the charm around Gabe with a thought. "It's a very simple charm. I can show you how I cast it and you can work out how you want to make it."
"Puns and quips are good for spell casters..." He said at the boy's raised eyebrow. "You know how hard it is to focus on your magic if you're angry or distracted, right? It's the same basic principle. You're basically giving them a chance to roll a concentration check."
The elder mage nodded and waved his hand creating a shirt and jeans for his youthful counterpart along with a gray zip up hoodie. The T-shirt said 'Non-Flammable? Challenge Accepted' on it. "I don't know your style. I had to improvise a little bit. Hope it's okay." He looked around. "The bagel shop should be that way." He pointed and started walking, slowly.

The sudden change in his vision came as a shock. It was a bit like the first time he tried on glasses, except with energy, not suddenly being able to read properly, and a far bigger change. ”Wow.” It was like glasses in another respect- he really wanted to just try comparing vision with magic and vision without, but seeing as he couldn’t he tried to sum up how weird this was: ”No idea what’s going on but it’s awesome.” And it really was. One of them was neat, ordered, what he’d expect from Fate, in a way. The other two were erratic in contrast. He didn’t really know any other ways to define it, or what else to look for.
Gabe continued to stare at the mess of magic there (he was sure the blue magic was his- if he was right it really did deserve its name) as Dr Fate continued talking. ”Yeah, totally. I don’t even think there were proper nerds before 1963-.”
Gabe nodded. ”It’s hard enough when you’re calm, sometimes.” He smiled at the reference. Fate was definitely his favourite major magic hero. Not that there was a huge selection, admittedly. He nodded after the comment though. Poor focus and chaos magic was a bad combination. Actually seeing the effects of his magic properly, he was thinking that anything fragile and chaos magic seemed like a bad combination, too.
The shirt reminded him a little of Aaron, in mind set at least, but for now, he could deal with that. Better than feeling like everyone could see his costume. Gabe shrugged slightly in response to the improvisation comment. It’s not like Fate would have known better, and he definitely appreciated it. ”Thanks.”” He quickly did up the zip on the hoodie, anyway.
Gabe quickly caught up to Fate’s walking and took step in line with him.

"Well, the way it was explained to me, was that we all have to various types of magical energies. Our different types of spell casting weave those energies in different ways. Basically, I just used a trick to show you what those energies look like. Figured it might something cool for you to see."
Kent found himself liking the kid. He was smart. A bit inexperienced, but he had a good head on his shoulders and that was what counted. He reminded Kent of himself when he was the same age, though Kent didn't have superpowers back then. He'd had a little bit of magic, but that was it. Lizzy was the superhero.
"Yeah... It really is. That's why the quips are handy. You make someone lose focus and it could save your life. Hard for them to throw a death curse at you, if they're so angry they can't see which way is up." He looked at the shirt and laughed. "I based it on one I had in my closet. When I was your age and first practicing my magic, before I became Doctor Fate, I had a problem with setting things on fire accidentally. It used to be a running joke between me and my girlfriend."
As the kid fell into step next to him, Kent smiled and looked over. "Name's Kent, by the way. People only call me Doctor Fate when I'm working."

”It’s definitely something cool to see.” And confusing. ”How distinct can they be? Like, could you trace back a signature to one specific person, or is it more of a types thing?” It would make sense if they could be unique- it might explain how other magicians seemed to know who caused which magical villainry at least a lot better than Gabe.
”Must be pretty good to get them that far.” He felt like Fate was talking from experience with that. It seemed worthwhile to try out at some point, or rather to get good at quipping so he could do that.
Gabe was slightly less begrudging of it after that. He’d rather it be a wizarding in joke than selected as a reference for him. Though for Gabe, it was less his magic that made the fires than him sparking out electricity occasionally. ”It just reminds me of someone.”
Were superheroes meant to give out their civilian names this easily? Admittedly, if they were only telling other heroes, and they didn’t tell surnames it should be okay, right? Oh, uh, I’m Gabe. Or Gabriel. Normally Gabe.“ God, he could make himself look so awkward when he wasn’t even trying. ”I guess it would have been weird to be calling you that in a café.”

"The types are kind of like a framework. Every type is rather distinct, but each power is distinct to its owner. It is possible to track the power back to the user. It's a lot easier, if you know the person and the form their magic takes, but it can be done with others. Just takes more time and effort." He tried pointing to some of the auras as they went, so that Gabe could see some of the various patterns that people had. "Some people have a little bit of magic to them. Even if they can't use it to our level. The person who wins two dollars on a scratch off all the time. They have slight auras, even if they're not trained. That's why their powers look wilder than ours."
As they walked towards the little breakfast spot, Kent just shrugged. "I'm great at annoying people until they get super angry. It's a family trait, I believe it comes from my mother's side of the family, but I can't be sure."
When he commented that it reminded him of someone, Kent nodded. The tone sounded very familiar to him. Like someone had screwed with him or messed with him in some way. The older mage nodded and mumbled a quiet incantation and the shirt changed to a red bat symbol instead of the phrase. He just gave a knowing smile. "Never you worry. I've got you covered."
Kent chuckled softly. "You're fine, Gabe. I don't normally give my name out either, but I figure you can be trusted for the moment. If that changes, then part of this day is going to be fuzzy for you and you'll just remember meeting Doctor Fate, not me." He tapped the charm again. "Though I will give you a lovely autograph as a parting gift." He nodded again. "That's true. I'm not really a doctor. It gets odd when they want you to save someone from choking and you have to tell them you're not that kind of doctor. It's like having a PHD or something."
