Walt stood beside Marty, staring down at the ground with an expression of stunned, vacant curiosity. There were tears slipping from the corners of his eyes, but he didn't know that. His mind and his heart were empty, but his heart was beating like a drumroll.
He looked up. Now looking into the sun, he shielded his eyes with one hand, slipping the other into his back pocket. The tears slowed, and his voice was level, measured, and totally unlike him.
"We're going back." Walt thought of his father briefly, thought of his warnings, but it came to nothing. He thought of the stories, the science, the bare reasoning behind the arguments against what he was about to do.
What changes? Who do we lose? What are we coming back to?
It doesn't matter.
"We gotta go. My father has to suspect that we're planning something, which means we have to move quickly- quicker than he can. And then James... Ginnie... we don't have time. Not to mention the Corps. They wouldn't like this- but screw it! That's really the only operating principle at this point, isn't it?" Walt nodded to himself, still glaring at the sky.
"We have to go." Walt's gaze shifted from the sun to his friend beside him, and his free hand swung down to dangle at his side.
"You know what I do. If I get us there, and if I get us back... even if everything goes perfectly, it might go wrong. I can't choose the variables. I can't fix everything."
Walt look at Marty with exhausted, unperturbed sincerity.
"This could be it, buddy. But then, it is anyway."
The Flash stuck a hand out towards the Lantern, turning back to face the sun, and looking upwards.
"Let's go get Lyds. Let's do something reeeal stupid."

The site of the explosion. This was where Lydia and T'Shan had been blown up. There flowers and small pictures and markers being put up. There was even talk of a plaque of some kind. His phone vibrated absently again. It was either his parents or one of the Titans texting him. He'd apparently bothered the Titans with talk of time travel. Walt had, of course been willing to go along with the idea. He'd answered the call shortly after Marty made it.
Marty's voice was flat. He now knew why his and Lydia's fathers preferred the masks. They kept the tears hidden from everyone else. "Of course we are. I can't go alone. This is something even my ring can't do."
There was so much that should have been said over the last few weeks. So much, that was left unsaid, because he'd wanted to give her time to heal. Because Marty didn't want to push Lydia into anything so soon after everything they'd been through. And now their time was up. She was gone. He knew every argument against why they were doing what they should. The Titans had made several. His father and mother had spoken to him of Hal's own possession by Parallax and the sins committed. There were plenty of reasons not to do it, but there was one damned good reason to do it. And that was all Marty needed to tip the scales.
Walt spoke again, pointing out the obvious and Marty shrugged. "F*ck 'em. I can stop the Avengers and the Titans. Even your Father. I don't want to, but I can. They won't be a problem. And the Corps... Well, that doesn't matter anymore. If we do this, there's a chance I'm going to lose my ring, anyway. But I've made my peace with that outcome. It's worth it in the end. I would give up my power ring any day of the week to see her again."
Marty knew all the risks and he'd made his peace with all the things that could happen. "I know what I signed on for. If we have to fight Death itself, we'll make it work. Variables are just obstacles we'll plow through. I need to tell Lydia some things. I had time to think both in that hell universe and over the last few weeks. She needs to know how I feel about her. How I've always felt about her."
As the Flash extended his hand, Green Lantern took it and gave a firm squeeze. "If it's it, then it's it. It always is."
"Let's go get our girl, Mr. West. Second star on the right and straight on till morning. Engage."

A weary, eager smile. One coerced, sudden chuckle. These were the last things shared between the Green Lantern and the Flash; these, along with the image of the two clasping hands, were the last things any onlookers would have seen, if there was anything left to see. But they were already gone.
Walt slipped into the mainline of the Speed Force despite the anticipated turbulence of the live cargo he carried on his shoulders. If there were any point of speaking aloud, Walt almost definitely would've made a joke about how much Marty hated being carried piggyback, but they were moving too fast for Marty to hear him. At this point in their journey, the two travelers were indistinguishable from the very concept of speed.
So don't drop him.
Walt darted from lane to lane, his eyes locked forward. There was no time for doubt, and Walt knew only what he had been told by his family from their experiences with this method of time travel. That was enough for him, and his confidence seemed enough to him to calculate the intricacies of the warped path of time, so Walt smiled feverishly.
But then he sensed it.
Generally, there were footpaths carved into the framework of the timeline, suggesting a literal infinity of routes around any transparent obstacle that threatened to prove nonnegotiable. If you can't go up or around, go under, Walt remembered in the voice of his father. But there was no way around. There was the barrier, and darkness: inky, liquid darkness on all sides.
So what? Walt snarled. Grimaced. His arms tightened, securing Marty to his perch. But then they loosened.
Through.
Shit.
Lydia.
The path realigned itself on the other side of the barrier; Walt could tell, and it was nearing. He didn't know if he could phase through it alone, but he knew that he couldn't pull it off with Marty attached. So he did the only thing he suspected could get them both through alive... and in the same century.
Spinning tightly, he flipped Marty down his back until he was gripping his friend's ankles. After building what he sorely hoped was enough momentum, he hurled the Lantern (whom Walt could only assume would be screaming in protest if he was capable of comprehending Walt's plan,) towards the barrier.
Not gonna cut it! Walt knew that the Marty missile wouldn't be enough to even crack the barrier on his own, but he also knew there was no way around it. So he gritted his teeth, evened his shoulder, sprinted in order to overtake his friend barreling through time towards the barrier, and slammed first into it ahead of Marty. He felt it splinter on impact, felt his body shudder violently along with it, and was about to exclaim in manic joy and surprise when Marty slammed into his back, and the barrier along with it, with a force imponderable to modern physicists. Walt felt the barrier falling away, he and Marty still moving forward with reduced momentum, and he reached for his friend's arm, smiling madly.
He missed.
He swept at his friend again, but he was too far and too fast. His smile disappeared, replaced by miserable surprise, and he barreled off the path, watching Marty do the same.

In a literal flash, Marty was on Walt's back. He hated running piggy back with Flash, but he understood it had to be done. Being a pilot, Marty loved traveling fast, but they were now traveling faster than he'd ever been with Walt before, faster than even his ring would allow him to go. The universe was bending around them. Marty just took in the sights as they ran through time itself. They were going for it now.
Actual time travel. No more hypotheticals, no more 'we could save her'. Actually, honest to god time travel. Walt had only ever gone 24 hours or so before, so this was big for him, but Marty had never moved at all through time. Mostly, because the Green Lantern Corps had some pretty strict rules about time travel. They couldn't communicate at this speed, but Marty could sense something was wrong. It hummed on a very real level. His eyes saw something dark and black ahead, though he wasn't sure how much he could trust his perceptions at this speed.
Then Walt was spinning, and he had Marty by the ankles. Marty realized what was happening then. The barrier was just that and Walt was going to try to crack it, by hammer throwing Marty and then trying to run past it. Next thing he knew, Marty was sailing towards the barrier, traveling at speeds he'd never been at before, on his own. At this speed and without the Flash, the universe itself seemed blurry. Marty steeled his will and it seemed all he could do to hold himself together. He put his hands up as if in flight, and braced himself, but then a red blur moved past him; Walt traveling even faster now.
Marty collided with Walt and the two went tumbling. He felt something snap like a rubber band releasing tension and then they spun. Walt reached for him, but missed. Marty fired a construct to lasso Walt, but it fell away, the ring not fully able to operate outside the laws of the physical universe. As he decelerated, Marty felt himself reenter the time stream. He emerged from where ever he was and came screeching out of the sky. Marty reached into the ring, now functioning again and used it to cancel out his momentum.
After a moment or two of getting his bearings, he sighed. He was in Times Square, but things looked entirely too different. Marty had gone back alright, but he'd missed his goal by decades. "Ring... Where... When the hell am I?"
"Current location is New York City. June 7th, Nineteen hundred and thirty five, by the Earth Julian Calendar."
"Oh, boy..."

Marty blinked out from the stream, descending so quickly that even Walt could barely perceive the direction he was moving in as he himself kept moving forward, forward in time, forward in space, forward towards Lydia.
Walt turned back.
He ran up, curving his rapid trajectory so that for an infinitesimal amount of time, he was running upside down, then backwards towards Marty. Desperately, Walt fought the stringent laws of the time tunnel in an attempt to reunite himself with Marty, but the plane resisted, and he lost his footing, tumbling downward toward where his friend had exited.
A shattering pop and Walt slipped out of the stream. He immediately started pinwheeling his warms, slowing himself enough so that he could could nearly match the speed at which he was plummeting downwards with his own two feet. Nevertheless, he was still moving with enough momentum to impact the earth with the force of a meteorite when he was finally able to detect his apparent landing zone beneath them. Could be worse, he thought, and then he hit the ocean at a slight angle, skipping tightly against the water for what he could only assume was several miles.
Eventually, he was able to get his legs to spin fast enough to generate a miniature tornado beneath him, scooping himself up into the air, suspending him for a moment, and then dumping him on his back onto the waves.
Floating there, arms and legs outstretched, Walt heaved, eyes wide open, catching his breath.
He floated silently for several seconds, spread out on the ocean.
Then he heard a massive blaring sound coming from not a mile away. Turning his head, he saw a massive boat in the distance. He propelled himself to his feet, springing a smile, already daring to hope that whoever he found on board would be able to confirm what he already suspected: he had done it, leapt to a moment perhaps only hours before they had lost Lydia, and he now needed only to skip back to New York before it was too late.
Instead, as he neared the boat, he saw something different.
A red, black, and white logo on the side of the ship. A warped cross.
Walt slid to a standstill, jogging in place just fast enough to sustain himself in place, while he stared, mouth slightly open in an "o" of surprise, before he chuckled.
"Nazis." He shook his head as he giggled disbelievingly.
He considered paying them a diplomatic visit, but felt compelled by the restraint of his father's advice not to interfere with the timeline any more than was necessary. Besides, he thought, I have to find Marty. We have to get back on the road.
Taking a last look at the formidable vessel, Walt turned and ran (he hoped) towards the nearest land mass.Â
Unbelievable. I can't take him anywhere.
Nazis. I hate these guys.
Walt laughed out loud and redoubled his pace, a streak causing waves along the current.

Marty opened his mouth and closed it a few times. Their plan to time travel worked. To an extent. Only instead of traveling a day or two before Lydia was in the accident, Marty had been flung 80 years into the past. He knew that Walt couldn't be too far behind. He choked down his fear at being stranded in the past and shook his head. Taking a deep breath, he forced his will into the ring. "Ring, encrypt transmission and boost signal strength. Try to find a lock on Flash's Titan comm."
"Transmission quantum encrypted and boosted to global range. Transmit when ready." The ring spoke in it's metallic voice. "Direct violation of Guardian Temporal travel directive has been logged."
"Flash, this is Green Lantern. If you can hear me, I think I'm in New York City. I'm not sure if you landed in the same time as me or not. It looks like I'm about 80 years in the past. I've boosted the signal and encrypted it, so that only your comm can hear. You may not be in range to reply back, but if you are, please respond."
The plan wasn't going nearly as well as Marty had hoped. Now, his only hope was that Walt was in this time or near enough that he could travel here. This whole using the speed force to travel thing was new for both of them. All he wanted to do was find Captain Marvel and bring her home. The ring pulsed with an emerald light.
"One altered Kree/Human Hybrid detected. Energy signature lock confirmed. Location recorded for your convenience."
"What?" Marty paused. Could it be that Lydia was thrown into the past? They really didn't know what type of bomb it was or what exactly the effects it had with her powers were. Everyone assumed she was dead, but... Hope bloomed in his heart. Marty needed to find her. He sent another signal.
"Walt... Meet me in Times Square if you're getting these messages."

The Lantern's voice came through on Walt's comm just as he reached the mountainous shore. A few words were dropped, but upon hearing the phrase "Times Square", Walt scanned his surroundings and made a determination of his location: Europe.
"Nope. Wrong one."
He clicked his communicator and spoke, excitement at hearing Marty alive and safe seeping into his tone, and started running back over the way he had come.
"Buddy! You stuck the landing! Good to hear. Was a little afraid you'd, uh... die, but- hey! We did it! Well, we did something. I have something to tell you. Met some new people. Old people. Probably dead by now, actually. Anyway, I'll be there before you can say..."
Walt skidded to a normal jog after canvassing the center of the Times Square plaza, barreling into Marty at what he deemed an acceptable pace. He hugged the Lantern, stretched out his arms to hold him at length, and beamed.Â
"...Marty McFly!"
Then he noticed Marty's expression, and his own became puzzled to match.
"What? What is it? Is it the Nazis? Because I could try this again. I'm good to go."

The sound of Walt's voice came through over Marty's ear piece. That made him sigh with relief. Flash had made it into the same time as him. That was good. He was afraid that he was stranded here for a prolonged period of time. He just shook his head. There was a calculated risk with this entire thing and they both knew they could die.
"I'm a test pilot. I can stick most landings. That's never been a problem before. Well, except that one time. That wing just kind of fell off..." Marty trailed off as Walt appeared. The words registered and Marty spoke without thinking.
"Hate those guys. But no, I'm not worried about them. One of us will suddenly remember our Charlemagne and we'll be fine." He displayed the readings from his ring, ignoring the glances they were getting from the general population in Times Square. They were operating several years before Jay Garrick and Alan Scott were active. "My ring is detecting a Kree/Human Hybrid here... It responded to my thoughts about Lydia and locked on to something matching her genetic and energy signatures. Here of all places."
After a few more glances, Marty looked over at Walt. "We've both seen most of the movies and tv shows. Read the books. In the interest of preserving the time line, you mind if I switch us to something more... Period appropriate?" He waited for confirmation and then willed his ring to change their suits. Marty's Green Lantern costume was changed into a button up shirt, jeans and a pair of suspenders. He willed Walt's Flash suit to change too. "We're here before Jay and Alan... We can't screw things up too badly. Well, more than we have, anyway."
Now, that they could blend in, Marty looked over to Walt. "I think my ring can lead us right to her."

Walt regained his sunny expression as his friend reciprocated his references, and he was was positively basking in his eagerness as his clothing began to change. He began to chuckle excitedly as he looked down; giddily, he smiled as his costume was replaced by a Hawaiian shirt, patterned with red and yellow flowers, as well as a pair of cargo shorts.
"My... god." He raised his head to meet Marty's eyes. "You know me so well," Walt spoke with honest if indulgent warmth in his voice.
Walt's thoughts were whirring around Lydia since Marty had mentioned her name, and in the few seconds since, the Flash had taken many hundreds of laps around that fulcrum. Likewise, Marty's mention of Garrick and Scott forced him to consider a few dozen bad ideas before he refocused on Lydia.
"Well, what a funny thing to mention," Walt pondered theatrically in response to Marty's reflection upon the risk of altering the timeline. "It's almost as though there's a precedent for speedsters making trouble in time." Walt rolled his head and displayed an explicitly poor poker face.
"That's interesting... why would Lydia be here? Now? The bomb didn't look like it had any atypical effects in the footage. But on second thought, I don't care! Like, at all!"
Walt was intense now, eyeing Marty's ring and the city around them.
"Can you get as close as a zipcode with your ring? I'd have her in seconds."

"It's not that hard. I've known you since we were toddlers."
He watched Walt's eyes unfocus for a second and that was all Marty needed to see. "No. We are not dressing up like them. Get rid of all the ideas." The fact that they were here was problematic enough to the time line. Marty knew they had to proceed very carefully. "Weird. It's almost like Flashes and time travel mix like fire and gasoline. I'd have to check and see if there was some kind of precedent here or something." The sarcasm was almost dripping from his voice.
Walt's question was rather valid. "I'm not sure. I scanned that site three times. There was nothing out of the ordinary. I didn't detect too much in the way of tachyons left over. There was enough to corroborate a massive explosion and release of energy, but nothing that made me go, 'time travel'. Maybe I should have gone a little more in depth, put more time into scanning. I let myself be too distracted."
Marty reached out and grabbed Walt's forearm. "Can we... Can we just take our time and look? If it's not her, I don't think I want to rush into it." He knew his request was tantamount to asking Walt to creep slowly through tar, but he didn't want to lose Lydia a third time. He just couldn't take it.

Walt's facial expression grew from eager to patiently sympathetic as Marty proceeded, predictably, to blame himself.
"Whatever stalls us in this grand crusade of ours, I seriously doubt it will be a lack of effort on either of our parts," Walt said. Shortly afterwards, when Marty appealed to Walt's nonexistent patient side, it took a noticeable effort to submit to his friend's request. Nevertheless, Walt nodded his head in understanding.
"Yeah. Sure, buddy. We'll go easy. No worries." Walt breathed a thoughtful sigh.
"We can start with the locals. Ask if any of them have noticed anything out of the ordinary. I should think a flying blonde from the future born out of an explosion should fit the bill. I mean, these people still read newspapers."
The speedster understood his friend's apprehension, but as impatient as he was, he was immune to it. This operation reminded him of what it was like to reclaim Marty himself, with the notable difference in how he and the Lantern dealt with the loss of their friend.
"I mean, assuming your ring doesn't lead us to find her on the poster of some Perry Mason movie. I can imagine."
His limit for idleness reached, he began skipping energetically from foot to foot, his flamboyant shirt bouncing along with him, and slapped Marty once on the back, smiling widely.
"Alright, c'mon! You lead the way! I'll count to three!"
Walt's smile became absolutely self-indulgent.
"...In Greek!"

"Yeah... I'm pretty sure that these people will think we're crazy if we start asking questions like that."
Marty focused his will into the ring and asked it to make his wishes come true again. The Lantern symbol flared in his eyes briefly as he tapped into something. Martin Jordan steadied himself, took a breath and overcame his fear. The ring lit up for a moment and then the glow subsided, when Flash hit him on the back. Marty nodded to Walt and then shook his head.
"I don't think Perry Mason exists yet. But don't quote me on that. I think you're about 20 years too early."
He forced his will back into the piece of alien space jewelry and it began glowing again. This time it pulsed a few times as he spun in a circle. The pulse became steady as he faced 42nd street. Marty smiled. This time the ring had managed to get a lock on the Human-Kree genetic structure. He rolled his eyes at Walt and started moving down Broadway.
"I should have brought the Marx Brothers..." Marty mumbled in his best Connery impression. The ring continued to pulse as he followed the street. The pulsing grew stronger as they moved. That was how Marty knew that they were heading in the right direction. He wasn't sure what he'd find at the other end of this, but he knew that it was going to be the answer to his question. It had to be. Lydia couldn't be dead. She couldn't be, right? He pushed down the doubt. Marty couldn't. No, wouldn't. Let fear and doubt taint his ring. He wouldn't fall prey to the Yellow impurity.
Helen Lydia Danvers was here. It was their job to find her and bring her home safely.

Walking was taking more of a toll on Walt than sprinting to Japan would have, but he nevertheless kept his composure as he strode alongside Marty down the busy city street. Locking his fingers behind his head, Walt observed his surroundings with interest. He was rather satisfied with the results of his first major experience with time-travel, although something else nagged at him as well, polluting his confidence.
Still twisting his head leisurely, taking in all the available sights of 1935 New York, Walt opened his mouth to speak to Marty.
"You know, pal, I still can't wrap my head around this. A bomb goes off. Lydia dies, with a big ol' question mark. And when we go back to stop it, we somehow end up all the way back here. I mean, I'm not saying I'm an expert at this Booster Gold stuff, but I do feel like we were led here by something. And now your ring finds Lydia..." Walt directed a curious, cautious look at his companion. Before continuing, he shrugged and sighed wearily.
"I'm just saying, with all our experience with doppelgangers and trans-dimensional prisons and our general tendency to walk into this type of nonsense... something's coming. And I don't mean the Nazis."
Whatever it was, the speedster felt oddly about it. Despite having every reason to exhibit his typical eagerness, Walt felt instead a kind of strange anxiety in anticipation of reaching their friend, wherever she was. He doubted seriously that this would come down to a bare-knuckle fight.
Just then, interrupting his thoughts, Walt caught a glimpse of a trail of golden hair, fluttering upwards, following a woman whose back was turned to he and Marty. Eyes shooting wide, Walt grabbed Marty's shoulder and pointed.

As they walked, Marty listened to Walt talk about what he thought might have been going on. Marty shrugged. "Time travel's not my area, Walt. It's kind of forbidden in the Green Lantern Corps. I'm breaking like four rules just being part of this trip. I don't much, but for all I know, maybe this was all meant to happen. Maybe we're being led here because it's part of some predestination paradox. I have no idea."
"Shhh. Don't mention those goosh stcheping morons. In three years, they'll be too busy burning books to read them, but still... no spoilers." Marty's ring let off another scanning pulse. "Do you think we're walking into a trap?"
As Walt turned Marty to face the flutter of golden hair, the Lantern's concentration broke and their clothes reverted back to standard costumes. Marty took off into the air, flying after her. Subtlety be damned. As he turned the corner, he came to the stunning realization that there was nothing there. Could it be that they'd both just hallucinated? Marty saw something move in the alley below. He signaled Walt with his hand and floated down into the alley way.
The alley was empty, but something about it didn't sit right with Marty. He looked over to Walt and then the whole alley began to melt and ripple. Then as suddenly as they were both there, they were gone. Marty fell out of thin air and smashed into a wooden floor.
A young man, only a bit older than them looked up from his book. "You two are late. She's been waiting for quite sometime. Pardon the rudeness... I'm Kent. Kent Nelson."

Walt watched as the girl proceeded down the alley, with the undisguised Lantern in quick pursuit. His own patterned shirt dissolved as well, again revealing the Flash emblem on his chest, but Walt neither reacted to it nor considered how nearby civilians would respond. Subtlety be damned, he thought. His eyes simply followed as Marty tracked Lydia around the corner.
Except as Marty drew closer to the figure, he realized that the lady began to dissolve, and Walt's hyperactive senses detected a dozen sudden shifts in the contours of the environment; the wind, light, even the colors of the bricks in the wall seemed to morph in the span of a few seconds.
"Martyyy..." Walt started toward his friend, barely managing to bend forward to initiate his fevered dash, when he briefly met the eyes of the Lantern. Then the world cracked and was replaced with a new one, leaving Walt, for a few moments, to run towards nothing, from nothing.
His nose cracked on a solid surface. His hand whipped up to cover it, and his mouth moved to form a few choice words, before his eyes adjusted to the figure of his friend, recovering from the floor. A millisecond later, he heard the greeting of the peculiar stranger, at ease in the corner of the room.
Quickly closing the distance to his friend, pulling Marty up to his feet, Walt's mind ran damage control.
We shifted... could be this timeline. Could be outside of time. Could be a different dimension entirely. Nose is definitely broken.
And that's Dr. Fate.
Walt narrowly lost his composure, chuckled listlessly, and locked eyes determinedly with the man with the book.
"My boy," Walt said with cautious good humor, addressing Marty.
"We are pilgrims in an unholy land."
