The loss of life was staggering. Kent Nelson watched as events unfolded in what used to be Central City. After what had happened with Titans Tower, it was clear that even Doctor Fate could not remain his detached self. The other members of the League had dispatched to quell various issues that Apocalypse's appearance caused before helping the Avengers deliver the final blow. Kent had other ideas in mind. He'd seen the deaths and destruction and realized what had to happen. While the other members of the team went off to stop the fires, Kent Nelson stayed behind and began laying out a spell.
The door to the main room opened and a blonde man walked in with longer hair and a leather jacket on. Kent raised an eyebrow as there was no real way that the other should have been able to get into the Hall of Justice. The blonde man raised a hand. "Ello, Fate. I got yer summons. What the hell do you want me here for? There are no innocent people in Washington. Though, Ghost Rider doesn't even care about them today. He wants to run screaming off for the Midwest."
"Yes, I know, Constantine. Please, keep the Rider in check as long as you can. I am almost finished working on the spell."
"Wait, what are you up to?" Jack looked around, suddenly uncomfortable. "Where is the rest of the League?"
Kent narrowed his eyes and looked at the Englishman. "This battle cannot be fought yet. We cannot win now. I've seen what happens if it goes through. We don't win. Apocalypse destroys everything."
"Do you watch the news at all? Because I'm a pretty sure it's goin' on now."
"We can stop it from happening."
"You're mad."
"No, there is a spell. One of the most powerful spells Nabu left in this helm. It can fix things. For a time. Until we are ready to face this fight." Kent finished moving his hands and the glowing lines on the floor finally coalesced into a pattern. "The problem is that Nabu and the Lords of Order have been gone a long time. And the nature of magic has changed since this universe was united. That's the reason I called you here. I can amplify my own powers enough, but to fully reach the entire spectrum, I need another source."
"Oh, no. I'm no one's battery, Doc." Jack said, lighting up a cigarette and taking a puff, looking around the Hall of Justice.
"The Ghost Rider is one of the most powerful entities of magic from one of those two primal universes. If my spell reaches out through both of us, we can draw on the full magic of this universe to do this. It would be enough to stop this. It would be enough to save millions, and eventually billions of lives."
"Like I care about all those people."
"It's enough to make sure that she lives through this. Is that enough?"
Jack sighs. "Sod off and make this happen already."
"This may hurt a bit." Kent nods and slides the helm on to his head, drawing on the power of Doctor Fate. Fate floats up into the air and begins to chant.
"Why the bloody hell wouldn't it?" Jack rolled his eyes with disgust. He drifted up into the air as well, lifted by the power of the spell. Something inside him, snapped. He supposed it was Nelson's spell. Jack Constantine was gone. Consumed by the power of the Ghost Rider. The flaming skeletal form hovered and spun around the mandala of energy. It nodded to Fate as the spinning mandala released a beam of energy that collided with the Rider. The Rider looked upward and screamed an unearthly scream as the magic that formed it poured into the spell. Half of the blue lines on the mandala turned bright red with the dark power.
A second beam lashed out and hit Doctor Fate in the chest. Fate's body went rigid as the connection was formed. Pain shot through his entire body and Kent felt the need to pull away. But then he thought of his son and his teammates. Then of the others around the world. They all counted on him. Doctor Fate could not pull back. Kent opened to the spell. He tilted his head back, screaming now as the energy poured out of him and into the matrix. The other half of the lines turned from blue to gold with the power of Fate.
The red and gold lines intertwined and spun around each other, forming complex patterns for a time. Finally, a column of energy fired upward and the energy entwined the entire planet. The energy rippled outwards and things changed. New Babylon disappeared. Titans Tower reformed. The dead were made living once more. The damned were set free of their Horsemen status.
As the glow receded, Fate and Ghost Rider, now restored to his human form, collapsed to the ground. Both of them covered in steam as they struggled to get upright. Fate spoke first, pulling the Helm off as he got to a kneeling position. "We did it. By the Lords of Order, we did it."
"Oh, good. I thought I felt like ass for no reason." Jack leaned back against the wall, knees against his chest. "So, everything is fixed? All is well. No one remembers. Shit like that?"
"Well, not everything. Changes have occurred. I'm not sure what kind, since we couldn't see them all. We fixed some things, but there are some who will still remember some or even all of the events as they happened."
"That's going to screw some people's heads up, Doc." Jack lit another cigarette and took a drag. "What did we do exactly?"
"We tapped all of magic for 10 seconds and moved all of that madness outside our own timeline. It's not permanent, but it should suffice for now. At least until we're ready to have that fight again."
"Ten seconds and we almost died. I'm not cut out for this world saving shit, Fate."
Kent Nelson looked Jack Constantine in the eyes and nodded. "Constantine, there are days where I don't know that I am either. This might be one of them."
