It was slightly uncommon for Ned to have jogged this far, but he had recently decided he was going to train for the 2017 New York Marathon so long distance running was definitely necessary. So he made a planned to make a day of it. He planned to run half the distance of the Marathon just to see how much practice he needed to actually get into the top 50 of finishers.
In hindsight, it might’ve also been a bad idea to do it at 6 in the evening rather than 6 in the morning, but his schedule was packed this morning. He had a Judo practice in the morning followed straight after with a lunch with Ginnie and then had to go home to do some homework and revision, so there really wasn’t enough time to squeeze in a run that could’ve taken at least 2 hours with all the preparation and the running time. So Ned decided to do it in the evening. He even decided to take Natalie with him seeing as she would love a walk that far. So when he finally finished writing his English essay, he changed into more appropriate wear of running shorts, a bright yellow sports shirt and running shoes.
As he was about to leave he went to search for Nat only to see her napping on the sofa and decided that it would be rude to wake her. Instead, Ned just puts in his headphones, put on his exercise playlist and headed out. Every once in awhile Friday would jingle in his ear on what direction to take and what street to avoid having to stop and wait for a green light at a minimum.
He had run half the distance before he got a weird craving for a street vendor hotdog, so he made a quick stop and bought himself a cheap hot dog and ate it while having a very nice talk with the vendor, a Haitian man called Raoul who apparently had a big dream of running a hot dog stand in New York City. Ned admired that. It was a simple dream and the man seemed extremely happy to be doing his job. The conversation then led to Ned explaining what he was doing. Raoul being a friendly man gave Ned a free water bottle. Ned tried to refuse to say he had been friendly enough, but the man kept on insisting. Ned eventually conceded and took it with him, but not before taking out a 10 dollar note and placing it on the man’s cart as he began running back to his house again. Bottle in hand.
The run back was fine until Friday told him to take a shortcut through an alleyway which just led to what seemed a recently installed chain fence.
”Really Friday? I thought you were kept up to date with all the schematics.” He said sighning and slightly out of breath.
”My apologies will update n- You have unwanted guests behind you, sir, shall I call the police?” Ned was confused as he turned around only to see his exit being blocked by 2 guys wearing clown masks. He noded his head as he heard Friday chirp in his ear again. ”Shall do. May I suggest distracting them?
”Clown masks? Really? I thought us New Yorkers were a bit more civilised then Gothamites. Or is the Joker making a desperate grab for some territory?” He said quite tauntingly.
The two figures just approached him slowly, as one brandished a switch blade and the other brandished a baseball bat he was hiding behind his back.
”The strong silent types, huh? I can respect that. Intimidating yet a hint of I wanna get to know you better, I wanna know what’s underneath the mask and all that crap. But I’m betting my life right now that you’re not trying to get some girls” He said as he backed up slowly as they still approached him, now adding a sinister silent giggle to the routine.
”Alright, boys… I got that one right, so I think you owe me my life back so… just get on out of here and we'll call it even.” He said back now against the fence wall. He could really use some help right now.
