The crowd in Robinson Park was abnormally large today. Gothamites did not have much appreciation for nature, in the Talon’s irrelevant opinion. On most days, Robinson Park remained quiet and empty with only the occasional dog walker or jogger in it. Most of the citizen preferred their concrete jungle than the natural beauty of the park. Which was why it was so odd to see a mass of Gotham’s middle class inhabitants in the park, especially so close to dusk. They were all listening intently to a man standing on a raised platform ranting on about his latest, trendy contraction project. From what the Talon understood from the very little attention she paid attention to his speech, Markel was unveiling a project that would flatten Robinson Park in order to make way for yet another wretched high-rise. The Talon liked to think, if she was not working on the Court of Owls’ orders, she would kill this man on her own. He was very avaricious and loquacious for being such a pain in the Court’s neck. Her handler had explained that Markel had turned down a very generous offer from the Court to include a thirteenth floor in his building dedicated solely to the use of the Talons. Unfortunately for Mr. Markel, the Court did not take no for an answer.
The Talon shifted in her place, hidden amongst the branches of a maple tree. She was close enough to the rally that she could get a good view on her target, but far enough away not to catch anyone’s attention. She shifted forward on the sturdy branch, taking care to avoid rustling the leaves, and lifted her modified blow pipe to her lips. The Court had provided her with unique equipment for this mission for some reason or another. Who was the Talon to question her orders? The Talon took a moment to take aim before blowing sharply into one end of the blow pipe. The poison dart hit Markel in the neck with perfect accuracy. He reached up to his neck and batted away the dart like it was annoying fly but unbeknownst to him, it was too late. The fast acting poison had already entered his veins and would soon take hold within the minute. The Talon slide from her place in the tree and disappeared as soundlessly as she had come. She only walked away a few feet into a corpse of trees when the sounds of panicked yelling reached her ears from the direction of the rally. She hesitated. Not for the yelling but a sudden feeling of nostalgia hitting her like a freight train.
This patch of trees seemed oddly familiar to her. But as soon as the feeling had come to her, it disappeared. The Talon grimaced and pressed a hand to her temples to stifle an abrupt headache that plagued her. Well, that was odd. More than enough strangeness for one day. The Talon glanced back over her shoulder towards the rally and saw that Markel had finally collapsed. The high pitched screaming of woman and the yelling of several men just added to her headache. From her vantage point hidden by tree branches, the Talon could see the foam spewing from the man’s mouth and his convulsions. His death must have been quite painful, the Talon recognized abstractedly.
