Marty just laid there on the floor for a moment and tried to get his bearings. He was disoriented from whatever just happened and was trying very hard not to toss his cookies up on the floor of this new place. It never boded well for a hero to throw up in front of someone they might have to fight. They didn't respect or fear you then. He managed to look over at Walt grasping his face.
Then Walt had him back on his feet and Marty was assessing the situation. They were face to face with Doctor Fate. The original Doctor Fate. Member of the Justice Society. Sorcerer Supreme. The man was a living legend.
"Sorcerers. I hate these guys." Marty quipped back without breaking eye contact with Kent Nelson.
The older man looked at them both and smiled. "I'm sorry. You two seem to be quoting something I'm not familiar with." He pulled out a handkerchief and handed it to Walt. "Sorry, young man. I didn't mean to hurt you." He looked at the handkerchief and nodded. "There's an enchantment on it. It will fix your nose. Sorry again. This isn't my usual home. I'm just in town to consult with my friend, Lamont. It takes a little bit to get the dimensions and angles right. And teleporting is sometimes questionable."
Just then a blonde haired woman walked into the room behind them and let out a gasp. "Hal? Barry? Or are you Wally?" Marty turned around and his face turned from excitement into a mask of confusion. Before them stood a Captain Marvel. Just not the one he was hoping for. Carol Danvers. She wasn't dead. Then Carol's face mirrored his own confusion.
"Oh, no. Martin Jordan. Then that means. Walter West. How did you two get so big? How long have I been gone?" She paused as if puzzle pieces were suddenly connecting. "More importantly, boys, what have you two done?"
Marty looked to Kent and the Sorcerer shook his head and shrugged. The boy from Coast City shrugged and looked back at Carol and did his best impression of a hologram from a 90's show. "Ziggy says there's a 97% chance you are not going to like anything we're going to tell you."

Sporting a comical look of suspicion, Walt snatched the handkerchief with a word of thanks. As he held it to his face, a feeling of warmth accompanied a smooth pressure as his nose slid into place.
Magic... Walt thought. Well, it saved me a few hours of looking like Robert De Niro.
Tossing the bloody cloth back to the sorcerer, Walt crossed his arms. You didn't hurt me. I ran into the wall. If this guy knew how many times that's happened before...
Walt's thoughts snapped back into focus about as soon as his distractions were generated, and he paced around Marty, coming to a halt beside him.
"Who's waiting for us, Fate? 'Cause if it isn't our gal, we've really got no interest in whatever magic show you've got planned for us. David Blaine's still alive in our universe, so." Walt, usually at the mercy of his struggling forces of curiosity and impatience, had no time for the former.
Then Carol was there.
Walt was stunned for a complete two seconds. The last time that had happened had been the first time he had tried a batch of Lydia's macaroons.
"Carol Danvers?" His voice was saturated with wonder. No coincidence, he thought. She knows something we need.
"Al's right, but I'm the Flash, who's surprised? Let's skip that part. To answer your questions, in order: genetics and diet, ten years, and we've gone ahead and torn up the whole goddamn timeline, and not for the last time, if we don't find our friend." Walt looked hard at her, but not without compassion, and when next he spoke, humor and astonishment blended to form his tone.
"She's dead- but only as dead as you, we hope."

Kent Nelson tilted his head. "I have no idea who that is."
Marty turned around. "He's going to be as big as Harry Houdini one day. Walt, stop blabbing things that break the timeline." He was still shocked to see Carol who was supposed to be dead. She was clearly trying to process everything that was going on. That was good. It wasn't just him who was having problems here.
"Have I been gone that long?" Carol said, quietly. "That means my girl is all... She's grown up. I missed out on a lot of things. I didn't even see her get to go to the prom."
"I'll fill you in. Her prom was... It was eventful." Marty took a few minutes to catch Carol up on the events of Lydia's life up to this point, letting Walt chime in where appropriate. Explaining that Phil Coulson and James took her in and raised her, and all the things up to recent events.
"So, let me see if I have this straight. Lydia saved an entire city and did what she felt was right. And you two, just decided to break space/time to save her?" She shook her head. "Of course you would. You're both spitting images of your fathers. Neither of them would follow the rules, if it meant someone would die. Neither would Kyle. It's this kind of stuff that breaks the universe."
Marty shrugged. "Respectfully, ma'am. I'd destroy the whole universe if it meant that Lydia would be alive and well."
Carol sighed and held the bridge of her nose. "Of course, you would. You both would. I'd expect nothing less from a Jordan. Or a West."
After a moment, Marty looked up at Carol. "Not that we're not happy to see you, but what are you doing here?"
"Well, Darkseid's Omega Sanction ended up throwing me back in time. I've been bouncing around in time. Mr. Nelson was nice enough to remove the effects. Then you two showed up. Admittedly, I don't have any information about Lydia."
Kent looked over at Walter. "Young man, did your friend say that you two accidentally came here? As if something bounced you here?"

Walt listened and contributed to Marty's rendition of Lydia's narrative, nodding and punctuating the story with a decisive "Amen!" following the Lantern's claim about destroying the universe.
"We've seen some remarkable things, ma'am, from a few timelines, dimensions, you name it. But we haven't seen anything like your daughter." Walt smiled. And then Kent asked about how they came to be in their new locale.
"It was an accident, that's for sure, but it was more like... driving on the highway at night, facing a split in the road, and choosing to go straight between them. Because I got this feeling..." Walt considered how to explain.
"I got this feeling that whatever was to the left was worse than the reality we came from, and that the right would've just taken us back home. Without Lydia. Which wasn't acceptable. Isn't."
Walt looked to Marty, though he knew the Lantern wouldn't have any spectacular insight on time-travel. Not the way speedsters did it, anyway.
Returning his attention to the older man, Walt continued.
"But, yeah, it felt different. I'm no expert, but it didn't feel the way it usually does. There was no canon, no detectable continuation of fact beyond a certain point. As if by leaving our timeline, we chose to leave every timeline." The implications would've jarred a less headstrong individual.
"Needless to say, we chose the nonexistent third option. My compatriot makes a commendable projectile. Nice hustle, by the way," Walt concluded with a sly smile and a light punch to Marty's shoulder.

A scowl crossed Carol Danvers face as the boys talked about universal destruction, but then it softened when Walt made the remark about Lydia. She knew she couldn't be too mad at them. They were kids who missed their friend. Both knew loss and pain and they wanted to fix it. She would be lying to herself if she said she wouldn't have done the same thing in her younger years. Though Marty's words did make her raise an eyebrow. The fire there reminded her of something. She forced a smile and nodded.
"I get it. I do, but... this isn't how you do it."
Marty nodded politely. He wasn't really interested in being scolded for this. Especially since they were going to be responsible for saving Carol Danvers now. "Respectfully, ma'am, we'll agree to disagree. Not much I wouldn't do for her."
Then it clicked. "Ah. You're in love with my daughter."
Marty stopped speaking. He was going to argue when Kent interrupted to ask a question of the Flash. He went to deny it and then focused on Kent and Flash's conversation. "We're going to discuss your intentions towards my daughter later, Martin. This isn't over."
There was a small nod from Marty and a sigh when Walt mentioned throwing him through the time stream. "I'm a pilot. I know how to crash land."
After listening to everything Flash said to him, Kent nodded. "It sounds like someone or something guided you here. It might not have been exactly the outcome you were hoping for, but it seems like some force wanted this to happen." Doctor Fate looked around. "I don't know much more than that. I don't know which force or what primal might have caused it. All I can do is offer to give you folks a ride back to where you came from. It might help you be more exact than your current arrangement."

Walt watched with bemused intrigue as his friend was analyzed by the older Danvers. His caution faded to form a wide smile after she promptly cracked the case.
"Oh, she's got your number, buddy. Cat's outta the bag." He laid a half-mocking, half-comforting hand on Marty's shoulder. Turning to Carol, he made his concise defense.
"Don't worry, ma'am. No worthier suitor is there than Martin Jordan. He cooks, he cleans, and he has no qualms about cracking the thin boundaries of space-time to keep her safe."
Just then Fate spoke up about returning them home. Walt listened without surprise, but smirked at Marty before responding.
"Magic school bus, eh? Gave this a whirl with a vampire once. It's not bad as long as you keep your drinks sealed." Internally, Walt rared at the opportunity to return home, but he had one reservation, and he looked straight at Fate as he voiced it.
"We still don't have Lydia. Don't get me wrong, this one's fine," -Walt held an upturned palm out towards Carol- "But we came here for a very specific make and model. Whatever force guided us here can't hold us here, and it can't keep us from looking. So can you help us find our girl, or should we meet back here in twenty?"

Constructs of Lydia formed and dissipated briefly and Marty shook his head and dismissed both Walt and Carol. "As fun and embarrassing as this has been, can we table the talk about my love life later?" He was glad that they found Carol Danvers, but Walt was right. They still hadn't found the girl that they came for. He listened to Walt speak to Fate for a second before the man raised a hand and spoke.
"I've already looked for her in this timeline, young man. My magic has divined that she's not present in this current location in time. After a brief search, I've managed to see that she actually went forward into the future." The man waved his hand and showed a brief vision of Lydia and T'Shan in another landscape. They looked healthy enough and Marty's heart lifted at seeing her.
Carol looked up at the picture and reached out to it. "That's... my Wicket. She's alright."
Kent Nelson nodded and waved his hand, fading the picture away. "Yes, I can't send you to her because it looks like she and her friend are already on their way back to your time. It will take a day or two, but she and her companion should be back where they belong. As I must return the three of you in order to preserve the integrity of space time. Will you allow me to return you?"

Walt bore a full-strength, patented Walt Look as he watched his friend squirm. They grow up so fast.
Then he saw Lydia in the mage's projection and his smile turned sincerely joyful. He looked at Dr. Fate with pleasure.
"Well, we can't have her beat us back, can we? I'd never hear the end of it. Send us back, Doc." Looking at Marty, Walt nodded as if confirming his assent.
"I mean, all things considered, this is going remarkably well. We've had worse paradoxes." Walt sputtered into light laughter before grinning at Carol and addressing her gently.
"And we'll bring her a gift to boot. She's gonna love this," Walt levied a finger at the woman. "You're gonna earn me snickerdoodles for a month!"
Walt lowered the finger and jumped wrap an arm around both Carol and Marty.
"Aww, lookit this, huh? The three of us, and Lyds- we'll be a big 'ol family!" Administering a rapid noogie upon his partner's scalp, he looked once more at the doctor.
"Thank you, doc. You ever need anything... send us a cosmic fax, or whatever you do. We owe you one."

Marty rolled his eyes and steeled himself, drawing on his willpower. He did not need Walt's antics now. Mostly because he and Carol were feeding one another at the Lantern's expense. The sight of Lydia in the projection brought a smile to Marty's face and he felt his cheeks flush when he saw Carol smiling at him. "Oh, don't you two start that."
The man nodded to the group and started working on a spell. The vestments of Fate appeared and he started chanting. Marty looked over at Walt. "No, we haven't this is our first trip through time. We've never had a paradox before this."
Carol cleared her throat. "This is your only trip through time, boys. You can't afford to be gallivanting through time and space like this. Trust me. I know from experience."
Marty laughed at the last statement. "You're going to be getting a life time supply of Snickerdoodles, Flash. I think that's assured." An emerald shield flickered into place to protect his scalp from the speedster's hand. "Quit that. You're going to make me bald."
Doctor Fate held a hand up to Walt. "I might hold you to that some day, kid. In the meantime... Both of you should go find your spitfires and do great things. Wait... That hasn't happened yet. I always get confused about that. Sorry. This portal will take you back about two hours after you left. Try to avoid time travel if you can."

Walt turned to Marty after Fate said something about spitting fire.
"Whaddid he say?" Walt said, confused.
Then, with a burst of light and a lingering whine like a bulb burning out, the three of them- Flash, Lantern, and Marvel- were gone from Fate's office.
Their landing was unexpectedly easy, and they found themselves on the streets of New York City without so much as a stirring headache. Once their feet were on the ground, Walt planted his hands on his hips and took a deep, theatrical breath.
"Ahh... can't you just smell the post-war inflation?" He leaned forward and grinned at Marty on the other side of Carol. "'S good to be home buddy! We..." His expression turned blank, only to reappear immediately with ecstatic joy spread across it. He tackled Marty in a buzzing embrace, dragged Carol into a group hug, then released him and shot his arms into the air, whooping with joy.
"I traveled through time!!" A few pedestrians on the other side of the street laughed and took pictures. Another man, a few feet away, nodded, impressed. "That's right!" Walt said, addressing the man, who was now smiling and withdrawing his own phone from his pocket. "Gotta add that to the resume!"
Walt exhaled slowly. Then, calmly turning to Carol Danvers, he spoke.
"You can stay at my place. Dad won't mind."

Fate watched them leave through the portal and turned to a shadowed corner. "They seem like nice kids. It's good that girl will get her mother back. Glad I got to be a part of that. But if I could ask, what's your connection to all this? I know you're not Jim. So you must be his successor then?"
A man in a green cloak stepped out of the shadows. "I am one of them, Mr. Nelson. Let's just say that I owed the girl a favor." He removed the hood of the cloak and revealed the smiling visage of Owen Merlowe at the older man. "Besides, even the Spectre pays his debts. That's why I brought them to you. Thank you again for the assistance."
"No problem. Anything for a team mate."
Present Day
Marty looked around and scanned the area with his eyes. Everything looked right. His ring displayed the date. It was only a few hours after they'd left. His mouth tasted like copper. There was an electric charge around them. He knew Lydia would be returning soon. "He said something about finding our spitfires. I don't think he was talking about planes."
As they were all pulled into a group hug, Marty nodded. "I know, Flash. I was there. I traveled too. That might be a new record for me. I've never gone that fast or that far before."
Danvers looked over and smiled at Walt. "Well, that's okay I have my own... Do I still have my own place?"
Marty looked over at her. "You do. It's still in the Statue of Liberty, but Lyds has been living there for the last few months. She was before we stopped speaking anyway." He gave a small shrug.
Carol nodded. "It might be best if I stay with Flash then. At least for a few days. I can get in touch with Hal as well and he and Wally can help me acclimate a little bit before Wicket gets back."
There was a nod from Marty. "I'd recommend getting in touch with Phil Coulson too. Even the current Captain America. They'll be most helpful. They've been helping Lyds out while you were stuck." Carol smiled and thanked the boys. Then Marty's ring chimed.
"Uh oh."
Martin Jordan of Sector 2814. You have violated the laws of the Guardians of the Universe. You will be brought to Oa immediately for disciplinary action.
His ring felt hot on his finger. "Flash... I've got to go. This isn't going to be pleasant." Marty disappeared in a flash of emerald light. He reappeared in the Citadel of the Guardians on Oa. As he looked around, the council of immortal Guardians of the Universe were assembled before him.
One of the small blue men addressed him. "Green Lantern 2814.1, you have violated the Guardians restriction on time travel. In the past, we were more lenient about this, but in recent times we have seen the need to protect the timeline. You willingly defied these rules. What do you have to say for yourself?"
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is the jurisdiction of the Guardians and the Lantern Corps to protect the families of Lanterns, right?"
"That is correct, but I fail to see how this applies..."
"Carol Danvers is the wife of one of Kyle Rayner. The Torchbearer. She was flung through time by Darkseid. Now, if you were aware of that, then you willingly disregarded that and left a member of our family lost in time. If you weren't, then fine. I went ahead and corrected your mistake." Marty gritted his teeth at the immortals. "The rule was broken and it was freely broken and if I had to chose I would break it again to ensure that the outcome was the same."
"You are arrogant, boy. You are much like your parents. However, you are also an exemplary officer in our Green Lantern Corps. We acknowledge the good you've done to save Carol Danvers. Rather than expel you, we will let you go with a suspension. Your ring and badge are suspended for a period of three terrestrial months. You will be granted access to the translation and AI functions of the ring and in emergencies, the life support sheath." The Oan immortal said, waving a hand.
"But..."
"You are dismissed, Green Lantern 2814.1"." Marty was teleported with a wave of the hand. He reappeared at the edge of Coast City. His ring flickered for a moment and then his costume melted away as its higher functions were deactivated. He looked around and pulled out his phone.
"Walt... I need a ride. I'm... somewhere near Coast City."
