Jamie!” she heard her name being called with what sounded like frantic panic. She woke, slowly, groggy and discombobulated. Looking around her cockpit, she realized she had woken up in her pilot’s chair, even though she distinctly remembered going to her quarters to sleep. She looked at her instruments while rubbing the sleep of of her eyes, trying to orientate herself.
Her head was screaming at her as she looked around, throbbing every time she moved it. All her instruments were flashing at her with warnings and information, none of it she was comprehending at the moment. Someone was still calling her name.
Reaching out blindly, she tried to find her headset. Her hand found it, knocking into the floor. “Flarking hell…” she got out of her chair and dug around her console for the damn thing, cursing the whole time. She spotted it way in the back and reached to grab it, straining with effort before her fingers closed around the headband and she pulled it toward her. She rolled over and put it on her head, clicking the on switch.
“Untwist your panties, Charlie, I'm here. I'm awake. What's going on?”

Attention, Charles. It is imperative that you pay attention at this time.
Charlie's eyes fluttered open. The last thing he remembered was passing out in Jamie's quarters with her after a night of hanging out in Starlin's with the rest of the Guardians. He focused and brought himself to consciousness. Judging by Worldmind's tone, he slept through the first or second alarm. "D'ast, Worldmind. What time is it?"
It is currently 0315 Knowhere standard time.
He rolled over and noticed that Jamie wasn't there. That wasn't unusual, as she spent nights in the lab when she couldn't sleep, but the urgency in Worldmind's mechanical voice concerned him. He sighed and shrugged. "What's the hubbub about? And why does it involve a 3 am wake up call." Worldmind projected itself above Charlie's bed, with the use of a projector in his helmet.
Rider, your girlfriend left in her spaceship and I'm not sure where she's headed. This wake up call is so that you'll go find her and see what's going on.
"Okay, weird. But probably a good idea. She didn't say anything about taking a trip." Charlie said, as he changed into his centurion uniform. "Worldmind... I need her course vector. Throw it up on the HUD. Leave a note for Wyatt and Rose, if I'm not back in 4 standard hours." Charlie put his helmet on and stepped out of the airlock. He did a few loops to wake up, taking in the scenery of the end of the universe before he created a stargate with his gravimetric powers and flew after Jamie.
The stargate opened and Charlie flew out, locking on Jamie's beacon. Her ship was on the HUD. Charlie pulled up his sub-etheric band and started transmitting. "Aegis... What the flark are you up to at this hour?" There was no response. "Jamie! What in blue blazes are you up to out here?"
Finally, a response came. Charlie sighed audibly into the mic. "My panties are untwisted, Princess. I'm just trying to figure out why you're taking a 3 am jaunt. Worldmind was concerned and woke me out of a dead sleep. I could swear we were in the same bed, not an hour ago. What gives?"

The cold floor felt good, at least for the moment, but her head was still pounding. She winced as Charlie's voice came over the headset, sounding like a sharp knife stabbing directly into her brain. She tried filtering through a few thoughts at once to distract herself from the stabbing pain. He'd found her. Of course he had. She had a beacon on her ship. And he had a knack for finding her even without her ship. Though he usually had help.
Why didn't she want him to find her?
She tried to think back, tried to remember why she had run, why she had simply supplied her ship and taken off without telling anyone. She couldn't find a solid answer. She had woken up out of a dead sleep with such a sense of urgency so strong she couldn't ignore it. All she knew was that she had to, that she was a danger to her family, her friends. To everyone on Knowhere. She just couldn't remember why.
“I don't...I don't remember." She hauled herself up to look over her navigation, hoping something might jog her memory. She didn't recognize them, which only confused her more. She sat back in her chair heavily, her headache not subsiding at all and the feeling that she was a danger to everyone only growing stronger.
"Charlie...I dunno what...I just...I need you to trust me when I say it's safer this way.” The pain in her head was getting more intense as she spoke. She rubbed her forehead in futility, barely noticing that her other hand seemed to have a life of it's own as it reached for the controls to the outer air lock.
"Flarking father of gravity, what the hell?" She cursed softly as she pulled her hand back just in time, looking at it very concerned. She had to get away from Charlie, had to keep him safe. Had to keep everyone safe. She just wished she could remember from what.

Charlie moved along side the ship and scanned it. Jamie's response had been less than encouraging. She didn't remember leaving Knowhere. That was just flarking wonderful. Charlie was trying to remember if the ship's hyperdrive had a kill switch. There had to be an override in there somewhere. He brought the command systems up on his HUD. Only to see a lovely access denied screen.
"Flark. She upgraded the firewall. Worldmind, start working on cracking that. I want the hyperdrive shut down and the control system encrypted."
Charles, this is going to take me a few minutes. I suggest that you try talking more. Pretend diplomacy is your strong point. I'm sure you can put some more points in that.
"Yeah... It concerns me when you start telling me that things are safer in a rather Stepford-esque tone. I'd like to believe you, but I'm rather concerned. Does this have something to do with that week we spent on Kylax?"
The ship's airlock opened. Charlie considered that a work in progress. He dropped alongside the airlock and slipped inside of it. The gravimetric shields flickered to life for a moment, before Charlie disengaged them. He could call them up whenever he wanted, if he needed. Charlie thumbed the switch to close the outer airlock and then tapped the panel to open the inner airlock.
"Lucy, I'm home." Charlie stepped inside the ship. "You've got some 'splaining to do."

"If it did have something to do with Kylax, I don't remember. I just...have this very strong feeling it's safer this way. Ok?" Jamie grumbled as she noticed him siccing Worldmind on her. The moment she started fending off the Class G intelligence, her headache started to abate as she focused solely on that task. Until of course Charlie set foot in her ship.
"No, nononononono." Charlie was inside her ship, the exact last place she wanted him to be. Her hands flew over her center console almost of their own accord as she started sealing off parts of her ship and setting jump coordinates while also trying to fend off Worldmind. Once she set an oscillating algorithm to keep Worldmind busy, she rushed out of the bridge towards the airlock. She stopped at the bulkhead door, seeing Charlie just down the way. She gave him a desperate look before hitting the panel for the door.
"I'm sorry, Ricky. You're not allowed in." She gave him a sad smile through the small window in the door. Then it felt like her head was splitting open, and all she saw was spots before yelling and dropping to her knees.
Scanning... Scanning... Ravager class ship. Well maintained. Current host: Human/Coluan hybrid. Good for revitalization. Must find strong upgrade. Scanning... Scanning... Nova. Classificaion: Centurion. Access to a sentient intelligence similar to our own. Must acquire.
Jamie watched from the back seat of her own mind as her body stopped listening to her and stood up to look at Charlie before reaching for the bulkhead door controls, only to find it wouldn't open. She let herself enjoy her small victory as her hands attempted to bypass it without her and ran into a brick wall. She remembered now, not that it mattered. It had happened on Kylax, and it had been a real bitch to keep it locked in her head for this long. But now...now she was hoping her algorithm kept Worldmind out, and her system lockdown kept her ship on it's course. She could vaguely hear the hyperdrive start to warm up through her little distorted mental prison. She only hoped it got to her predetermined coordinates.

"That's not concerning at all, Princess. You have some holes in your memory that concern me."
Charles, she has set up an oscillating algorithm that is making this quite difficult. Every time I get close it changes. Your choice of mate is becoming frustrating today. How like your father you are, at times.
"Thank you."
That was not a compliment.
Nova saw her and his eyes lit up. Then she returned his reference and dropped the bulkhead in between them. Charlie ran over to the door and looked at it. The bulkhead was solid. He knew that much because Jamie had designed the ship. It was her pride and joy. He started tapping buttons on the console. She'd given him his own personal code to the ship's system years ago. It was like giving him another key to her car and he loved it. Now, Charlie was saddened to find that he'd been locked out.
His mind pondered the options. A full powered gravimetric blast would open blow the door open, but it would probably take out most of the cockpit and leave Jamie in several pieces. He looked back at the panel. Blasting that probably wouldn't work either. Jamie had seen too many Star Wars movies for that to have any effect. Then he heard the hyperdrive core powering up.
"Worldmind, can I generate a gravimetric field to keep the ship from going into hyperspace?"
That depends, Charles. How many pieces of the ship did you want it to make it into hyperspace? Because I imagine that not enough of the ship will survive for either of you to argue about it afterwards.
"Right. Bad idea. Noted." He stared at the bulkhead. "Suggestions?"
Something I've learned from Mycroft and your father. I suggest you take a moment and be mindful of your surroundings. Patience will help you here, Padawan. Also, it might just be easier to let the ship finish the jump. Less chance of death.
"Worldmind... I hate when you're right sometimes." Charlie sat down at the table in the galley and decided to see how this would play out.
I know, Charlie. So does your father.

Hyper drive activated. Destination? Unknown. Must learn where ship is headed. Proceed to bridge.
Access navigational computer.
Access denied. Attempt number two. Access denied. Attempt number three. Access denied. Host has locked out control access. Must upgrade before destination is reached. Accessing Host memory for ship layout.
...access denied. Other information found. Upgrading initial classification of host. Enhanced hybrid. New hypothesis: brute force may open bulkhead door. Will attempt.
The fist connected with the massive metal bulkhead door, leaving a small dent. The sound of the impact echoed throughout the otherwise quiet ship. Then another, and another, in a methodical fashion. But not enough progress was made to get the door open. Other routes were considered, ventilation seemed plausible, but repair access seemed the favored choice. Swinging up into one was easy enough, but navigating became difficult. Access panel for the hyper drive was found before an outlet near the Centurion.
Interfacing with access panel. Attempting to bypass lockout.
NO! Jamie fought to keep Brainiac from accessing the navigation and hyper drive controls. She only succeeded in having the whole thing freak out and seize up. That sent the nanites into a panic and sent them all scrambling around before kicking out a grate and dropping down right in front of the galley.
Centurion found. Must commence upgrade before imminent destruction.

Nova was on his feet. The pounding on the bulkhead was concerning. Mostly, because it was coming from the other side of the bulkhead. The side that Jamie had just locked him out from. The metal warped slightly, then again and again. Three dents and then nothing. There was quiet now and Charlie found that to be the most concerning. He tried using the comms a few times. "Jamie? What's going on? Jamie?"
No response. Then there was a shudder throughout the ship and the Centurion stumbled for a moment, before regaining his footing. "What the hell was that?"
Worldmind answered. Charles, the hyperdrive was just disengaged. We've fallen out of hyperspace. It will take me a few minutes to access the sub-etheric channels and get the Universal Positioning System online. I am having trouble accessing the system. I suggest you take immediate action.
Then Jamie dropped down from the maintenance hatch into the galley with him. Charlie knew there was something wrong. He just wasn't sure what. He brought the shield up with a thought, and then with another thought his visor array began scanning her. Charlie wasn't sure what was going on, but it was starting to get irritating.
"Worldmind, if you can punch through the interference, get Wyatt on the line. Also, find out where the hell we are so that I can figure out what the plan is here."
I am attempting to do both of those now, Charles. The jamming is rather strong. It seems to have been made active to keep the ship from sending out messages. I should be able to link to the Nova Corps stellar network with some work. Please attempt to stay alive in the meantime. I will attempt to transmit to Wyatt Andrews.
"Yeah, that should be a walk in the park."

The ship jostled and rocked, making standing or walking slightly difficult. The proximity alarms started going off as the ship shook more, taking quite a beating from the asteroid belt it had suddenly dropped into the middle of. And though she stumbled a bit, her eyes never left Charlie. Her eyes had locked on him in a predatory stare. Each step forward was measured, both to maintain balance and to fend of an attack that might come. Fluidity of seamless control had not come yet, as Jamie was still trying to fight back and regain control of herself.
Once the plan of contacting Wyatt had filtered through to Jamie, she fought back harder. I will not let you take over anyone else! Jamie took the risk to probe the processes that were going through the nanites. She knew it was risky, leaving her own thoughts slightly less protected, but she had to know how to stop it from spreading. Then she saw it and it scared her cold. With every breath, more nanites were released into the air, a small, invisible cloud hovering around her. Newton forbid she sneezed.
She tried to wrest back control as her body decided to leap at Charlie. She only succeeded in putting up a shield around her own head as the rest of her body did not listen, trying it's damnedest to get a hold of her boyfriend, trying to pin him down for maximum exposure. But she maintained her focus, trying to will her shield to tighten so much that not even microbes or nanites could get through. The downside was she'd never done that before, and she was pretty sure a nosebleed was not the worst that was going to happen. It was working, but between the strain and the sudden oxygen loss, the attack turned inward to her. Hands scrambled over the orange psionic shield in vain, looking for a way to break it.
Alert: Host is resisting. Must remove obstacle in order to upgrade. Host body shut down imminent. Upgrading classification again: Host has psionic capabilities. Ship integrity rapidly decreasing. Must protect host body until upgrade can be made.
The ship started to shake violently as it was tossed about, bouncing from asteroid to asteroid before the shields finally caved. It slammed into one massive asteroid, sheering off one engine before it broke free of the belt and shot past Mars, leaving a trail of debris in its wake.

Far off in another part of Space Sector 2814, Wyatt Andrews was finishing up his own latest adventure. Or... some might claim he was escaping the consequences of his own actions. "Lestrade!" The blonde shouted while adjusting the frequency his helmet's communication's devices to reach back to his ship. "Have the engines running, I hit a minor snag!" He declared, sprinting across rocky ground, a rather sizable vial held in his free hand as he looked over his shoulder.
A small handful of aliens were in pursuit of him; it was fortunate however, that they appeared dressed more for ceremony than for combat. The weapons they were waving, while certainly intimidating looking, were ultimately less than... up to the challenge of piercing the defractor the erstwhile human was using to protect himself from laser fire. It was also incredibly fortunate that Wyatt Andrews was wearing lightweight clothing for this trip while his pursuers were in grand looking, but rather cumbersome, armor.
What have you done this time? Lestrade's tinny voice came across the radio, in the background the blonde could hear the engines of his ship coming to life.
"Hey, it isn't MY fault." He protested. "I passed their tests, I saved their Prime Minister, or President, or whatever the local title is... it just happens that the particular reward I wanted wasn't copacetic with them. Turns out the chemical I wanted to retrieve is as closely guarded here as Vibranium is on Earth."
So, you stole it. And now they're trying to kill you? Fortunately, we're in a position to place several dozen stellar systems between you and your latest enemies.
"Meaning what?" He asked, throwing the vial ahead of himself like pitching a baseball as he dove into a roll to avoid a low hanging tree-branch. As he got to his feet and, barely, caught the vial Wyatt made a note to himself to stop parking so far from the main cities.
We have received a transmission from Worldmind on behalf of Charles Rider in regards to your sister.
That got his attention, and fortunately, the ship was finally entering his field of vision. "That is concerning. Get the coordinates from Worldmind, punch them in the drive. And have that door open for me!" He added, casting a look over his shoulder.
It would be a photo finish, but then... the best races usually were.

Charlie braced himself as the ship was pounded by asteroids. The look on Jamie's face, as she approached, was unfamiliar to Charlie. Or rather, he didn't usually see it outside of their quarters after a few drinks from Starlin's. In this particular situation, he thought it was kind of threatening. As he opened his mouth to speak, Jamie lunged at him.
The human rocket went down like a ton of bricks. He noticed that Jamie had a bubble around her head and then warnings lit up across his HUD and his space on his helmet for his mouth closed off completely, switching to life support mode.
Rider, it's imperative that you pay attention at this time. I have detected nano-machine inside the force field around Jamie Andrew's head. She's trying to protect you from something. I've sealed the suit and switched you to your air supply.
As her hands flew up and tried to break the shield around her head, Charlie reached up and tried to push her off. "Hey, I like you being on top too, but you should probably be in your right mind and this isn't really the place or time for it."
Charlie, I've punched through the interference. I managed to get a link to the Nova Corps stellar network on the edge of the system. I managed to get a message to Lestrade and managed to get a location fix from the comm relay. We're in the Sol system, between Earth and Mars. That would be the asteroid belt banging outside."
The ship shuttered as one of the engines tore free. Nova's world was filled with the sound of sheering metal and the screaming of an alarm going off in the background, Charlie sighed. That was the sound of something that wasn't going to buff out. Charlie released a low level gravimetric pulse to in an attempt push Jamie off.
"D'ast. What else can possibly happen today?"
Charles, the beacon has just detected a vessel jumping out of hyperspace. I'll see if I can get an identification on it.
"Why do I even bother asking some days?"

Jamie was having one of hell of a time trying to keep the force field up without total control of her own body. She knew there was a nosebleed in her very near future at the very least. At worst, which seemed to be more likely with every passing second, was she'd be completely cut off, possibly even cease to exist. You're not dying today, Andrews. But if you are, you're taking the damn computer program with you. She let her relief at Charlie's systems reacting to the nanites break her concentration for just a fraction of a second. But that was all that was needed. The shielding around her head broke and nanites went everywhere and she felt any control she had get cut off. She felt utterly alone, trapped in her own head, with no way of knowing what was going on outside. She only hoped that if it came to it, Charlie would do what needed to be done and shut her down.
Brainiac fully online.
They sat up, rolling back to their feet after the gravimetric blast created distance between them and their target. Eyes opened, fully taking in everything as three distinctive red dots formed on their forehead. Structural integrity of the ship was severely compromised and would not be lasting much longer. However, with the new discovery of the host's psionic powers, survival was up to 78%. Which was good, because currently there was only a .09% chance of getting through the Nova's defenses before the ship tore itself apart.
"I am in my right mind now. Perhaps you'd like to take off that helmet and try again.
The ship lurched sideways as it slammed into a rather large asteroid before it went screaming past Mars in a full tumble. It was all they could do not to bounce around, finally flexing the psionic muscle of their host and creating a bubble shield around them as the ship hit Earth's atmosphere with a jarring jolt, tossing everything that wasn't tied down around the whole ship. Everything became a projectile as the ship fell through the atmosphere. They tried to shove themselves farther into the galley while outer pieces of the hull started to break off as the ship headed for a crash landing.
"I believe you should hold onto something, Centurion. It would be best if you were undamaged."

'Pouring on the speed' was a term Wyatt liked to use. Not simply because he'd been something of a runner back on Earth. (Lacking the abilities of either of his parents or siblings, Rose had been quite adamant that Wyatt be able to get out of dodge as quickly as possible if things went pear-shaped. Fortunately, he turned out to enjoy the experience.) But also because it sounded dramatic, and Wyatt was nothing if not dramatic. The series of hyperspace, sub-space, slipspace, and whatever-space lanes that were available to him were actually fairly wide as well, rigging up his ship to travel the universe in a similar manner to a Lantern had been one of the first projects his family had provided once he owned the dang thing.
But, in spite of all of that... it seemed for a moment that the erstwhile human had jumped back into his home system too late. Sensors picked up the debris from a ship, still hot from the engines and Wyatt's hands clenched around his controls. "Lestrade-"
"I have already scanned and picked up two lifeforms aboard." The robot offered in his customary tinny voice, seated in the co-pilot's spot and not bothering even to swivel his head towards his creator. "I would imagine one to be your sister and the other Centurian Rider." He added.
Wyatt nodded his head, his breathing suddenly coming more easily as he leaped from his seat to pull on the helmet of his 'Space Ace' costume (or 'uniform' as he preferred to call it, even if there was no standing organization to make it a uniform).
"Would it be a good idea for you to leave the ship to attend this situation, sir?" Lestrade inquired, finally turning his head to watch Wyatt.
"Jamie isn't the type to just crash her ship for fun. If it's hurtling like that, something happened. We've got the momentum and the mass to use micro-gravity to adjust the course so it doesn't collide with other celestial bodies, but someone still has to pull people from the wreckage... between Jamie and Charlie if nobody is flying out... something is going catastrophically wrong." He remarked, sealing the helmet and with the additional momentum of leaping from an in-motion ship, hurled himself towards what remained of his sister's.
It took some fiddling with his helmet, though, to find a wide-band signal to transmit on. One he was sure all the necessary players (Charlie, Worldmind and, if possible, his sister) would hear before his voice came over, sounding considerably more chipper than he felt as momentum carried him towards one of the holes torn into the former spacecraft. "So, I suppose I'll bite the bullet here and make the 'women drivers' joke?" He called out.

“This is usually the kind of thing that starts with ‘There is no Jamie, only Zuul’. Not cool, whatever you are. You can’t just go hijacking someone’s d’ast body. Besides, I don’t take off my helmet on the first date.”
The transformation Jamie underwent was disturbing. It triggered some memory of a high level threat in the realm of Ego, or a Sun-Eater. Brainiac. He’d heard Jamie and Wyatt’s dad talk about the machine being. He was not prepared to deal with that today. He’d have to take some extra precautions. It sounded like the thing wanted to assimilate him next.
The ship impacted with an asteroid and started tumbling end over end. There was a collision alarm and the sound of more metal wrenching and crushing, as well as the sound of air leaking. Somewhere, the hull had just breached in one or more places. Hopefully, the emergency force fields were functional or Jamie was about to run low on air. Charlie cocooned himself in a gravimetric bubble and bounced off every surface in the galley, including Jamie’s own forcefield.
Charles, we’ve passed Mars at an alarming rate. Current speed should have us inside Earth’s atmosphere in under 3 minutes. I am attempting to connect to the helm to see if I can access at least some of the basic functions and decelerate us.
“Yeah. Undamaged, my backside.” The Centurion sighed. “Worldmind, any good news?”
Well, depends on your version of good news. The other ship has been identified as Wyatt Andrews vessel. We are being hailed by him on various channels. I will patch it through the sub-etheric band for you.
As the joke came through, Charlie sighed. “Wyatt, things are definitely lopsided here. Jamie’s doing her best Exorcist impression in here. Looking like a Brainiac kind of thing. Keep your suit sealed and watch out for that left hook.”
Charles, we are entering the edge of Earth’s atmosphere. The helm systems are too damaged for me to slow our decent. I have managed to patch into non-essential systems and short range sensor scan has detected a vessel coming in from behind the moon. Historical records show the vessel is… Kryptonian in origin. Unknown configuration.
“Wyatt, we’re in for a bumpy ride. Not sure if you made it in the airlock yet, but we’ve got help on the way too, I hope.” Charlie tried to look for where Jamie had landed. “Worldmind, transfer specifics to Wyatt on the other ship.”

The Kryptonian probe sat in the pilot seat of the large arrowhead shaped vessel. The ship was comprised entirely of Kryptonian Sunstone. Jor had been growing it for months and it was finally finished. It lacked a hyperdrive, but that would be added later and wasn’t a problem. After careful research, Jor had found out that Zoey’s birthday was approaching and he’d decided to take her somewhere special. He wanted to take her into space for the first time and show her the other worlds in her solar system.
Today, he’d brought Lydia Danvers along to help him calibrate the piloting system. Since it was now complete, this was the shakedown cruise before the maiden voyage. He’d wanted an experienced pilot along with him, to help work out any bugs or flaws that might come up while they were testing. He only knew two human test pilots, and of the two Danvers was less reckless than Marty. That and Lydia’s level of invulnerability was also handy should anything go wrong, especially since Marty currently lacked powers.
They were running the ship through some maneuvers between Earth and Mars, when they detected a ship sending out an automated distress beacon. Jor let Lydia handle the controls and bring them in on an intercept course, while he began scanning to ascertain the situation. He wanted the interface to be calibrated for human mental processes and Lydia would be the best pilot for that.
The scans showed a ship tumbling through the void at high speeds. Scans couldn’t identify the type, though it was showing signs of severe damage. He detected two life signs aboard. That was good at least. Another hyperspace disturbance nearby. This time between Earth and Mars instead of the edge of the system. “Lydia, I’m showing two life signs aboard the damaged ship. And another ship has just dropped into the system. One life sign aboard. It’s not showing hostile. Weapons and shields are inactive beyond the standard navigational deflectors.”
Another few calculations as the boy of steel tapped his console. “They’re going to hit the atmosphere in a few minutes. I doubt that there will be much chance of slowing with the damage they have. A crash looks fairly certain.” He paused. “I wonder if the other ship is a rescue mission. The occupant seems to have left it and is journeying over to the other vessel.”
“I think you have the gist of the controls. If I go out there, I might be able to slow them down. If you can get close, you can use the mental interface to configure a… tractor beam, for lack of a better term.” He pulled his helmet on over his head and gave Lydia a thumbs up when hers was in place. Then Jor opened the canopy, his harness and flew out into space.
Superboy moved into the path of the tumbling ship and moved underneath it, giving the ship a push in the opposing direction, to correct the spin. Once that happened, he slipped in front of the ship and pushed it upwards, away from the atmosphere. It was heavier than expected, but even if he could slow the descent long enough for Lydia to complete her task, it would buy the time to help rescue the crew and aim the ship for the ocean. The Kryptonian’s muscles strained as he pushed up against the ship and slowed it.
“I should find a way to communicate with the crew. Maybe I can bring this ship to the Watchtower, instead of landing it on Earth...”
