There was a kidnapper going around Gotham. Now he likely wasn't the only one, but he was one of the worst. Because not only was he kidnapping little girls, the girls were later found, well partially found. JJ wasn't going to let this continue, not in his city. The kidnapper was careful though. They did whatever it was they were doing, then hid for a few weeks. Now the few weeks were up and Blue Bat was on the case. But he wasn't alone. He had his trusty sidekick in training, now apparently going by Nightingale. Admittedly he liked the name but so far it was the third or fourth one she'd tried. Either way she was in the kidnapper's demographic and would make for bait.
Blue Bat watched from the shadows of the roof tops as his daughter, in a blue hoody and black pants walked down the street. Gotham was dangerous for anyone at night and he definitely wasn't letting her out of his sight. He knew it was dangerous and had long ago hung up on Herald berating him constantly. Of course JJ also knew that Dick knew it was their best option and she could protect herself. JJ noticed the minute twitches of all the security cameras as they followed Barby, skipping down the dimly lit street. He couldn't help but laugh lightly as she skipped along, as if it were a bright sunny day in the safest city in the world.
It had been a few hours and JJ was about to call it a night when he noticed movement. Someone was moving a long with her through alleys. She as coming up on a camera blind spot and broken street light. Sure enough as soon as she entered the blind shadow he grabbed her. JJ moved faster than he'd likely ever moved in his life. He swung down as he tried to run though the shadows with a squirming Barby. JJ landed in front of him and more importantly, between him and his get away vehicle. Barby delivered a staggered headbutt to the shocked man and squirmed free. The kidnapper looked and saw Barby had removed the hoody and wore a blue and black costume that seemed faintly similar to a Nightwing costume.
'I really hope you don't surrender."
JJ said cracking his knuckles. The man shakily drew a pistol and JJ smiled. Of course it was hidden by his mask but he was ecstatic. In a blur JJ grabbed the gun with one hand and began to deliver repeated punches to his face over and over. The man's knees went wobbly and soon he was down, groaning. JJ continued to punch over and over. He was swinging for every parent that had an empty bedroom. Every parent who felt like they'd failed. Every parent who wanted answers, by any means necessary. The man had lost consciousness some time ago and now Nightingale was trying to plead with Blue Bat.
'Blue Bat, let him go! He's down, he's done, stop!'
She tried to grab him but he managed to slip free and continued to punch. His hand gripping his gun was potentially broken as well from how hard JJ had a hold of it. Barby, realizing she had no other choice hit the emergency beacon.

Staring at a screen, Dinah tried to extract any more information than she already had on this new Red Hood. The light from the screen was the only one on in the room and her eyes weren't very happy with her about that fact. But all she had was a profile on him, building in her head. He was a asshole. But he seemed to operate with a code. Mostly. She'd been pouring over police reports and news articles since before the sun went down in her makeshift apartment in her office. She needed a break.
"Well, at least you know why he doesn't just shoot you every time you get in his way, Dinah." she sighed and pushed away from the desk. She was not the detective on the family. She was good at seeing patterns though; patterns of behavior, attack, numbers. She could pick out lots of things. She'd figured out awhile ago his seemingly random incidents, that varied greatly in both violence and objectives, said he probably did a lot for money. But it still didn't tell her much about him. About why. His civilian casualties were minimal and even then, they weren't killed by him. He was an annoying pain in her ass, just like she was sure he thought the same about her.
Her cell phone rang and she plugged the blue tooth into her ear as went about shutting down her commuter.
"Go," she answered, then immediately shot up out of her chair. "He's what? Of all the stupid....give me his location...I might have to knock some sense into him." Dinah flew through the apartment, heading to her makeshift closet/secret changing room. JJ was about to get an earful and this time he wouldn't be able to hang up. She'd heard about the case, and had thought of her niece's safety as well as every other little girl in Gotham. She knew Thomas and or JJ would be on it but not like this. Barby was not bait and she'd murder her brother for even trying something that stupid.
She flew across the city, running faster than she ever had before. This was beyond ridiculous. While she was running, she saw Barby's emergency beacon indicator on her HUD.
"Mother f*cking son of a b*tch!" She didn't know what was going on but she knew that beacon only went off in dire circumstances. She was about to find out anyway as she was practically on top of them. She didn't even stop to see what was going on in the alley below, she just dropped down. Once she could see that her niece was was indeed safe, she focused on her brother. Who was beating an already unconscious man into a bloody pulp. She acted quickly, moving in from behind and looping her arm around his mid swing, pulling it behind him and yanking him away from the unconscious man. She struck down at his elbow on the other arm, trying to get him to release the guy's hand as she pulled away, tossing Blue Bat away from his victim.
"Ok anger management 101! Calm down! We do not, do not play judge, jury, and executioner! Now do not make me make you think you are a five year old girl with pig tails, because I will do it." Nightwing did not want to fight her brother, but she would, if it would knock some sense into his stupid head.

He was lost completely in what was happening. Blue Bat was gone and this was just another parent avenging the rest of the parents who'd lost children. He'd gone full vigilante and was in the process of pretty much crushing the man's skull and likely leaving him brain dead, if he was lucky. Of course if JJ had looked into him more he would've realized this was even worse. But he didn't have time to focus on anything, he was just going for vengeance. His senses didn't even pick up on Barby pleading with him to stop or Dinah coming up behind him. He pulled back for yet another punch and felt an arm wrap around his own and felt a chop to his elbow.
He was pulled back and looked around, finally hearing the rest of what Dinah had to say. He looked down and saw a bloody man, laying there in severe pain and luckily alive. He knew it was only a matter of time before the man would've been killed. But instead the man would likely survive. He was out, and would be eating through a straw for quite awhile.
"Oh....oh god...."
He shrugged Dinah off and looked over at Barby.
'Nightingale.....c...come here.'
Barby slowly moved towards JJ before going behind Dinah.
'That wasn't right. Yes he is evil but wow....I thought we didn't do that.'
"You're right Nightingale, we don't do that."
Luckily the guy was still alive, as was evidenced by the groan as he potentially tried to regain consciousness.
"We need to get out of here. You two can yell at me later, just not here."
Right here was just not the best place to get into that. He knew he'd hear it from both of them and likely Dick as well. He'd gone too far and he felt terrible. He held his hand out for Barby who slowly took it before he fired a line from his hand. He picked her up and was pulled up to the roof. He hugged her when he got up there.
"I'm so sorry sweetheart, so sorry."

It was a slow night. Owen had left the loft and gone out to clear his head. He wasn't really even in the mood to steal anything. Everything was going decently for a change. He'd made enough money so far, to keep up with the bills and Owen was putting as much as he could afford aside for an experimental treatment. Even with Nightwing's interference, he almost had enough. A few more jobs and he'd be able to get Billy the treatment.
As Red Hood landed on a rooftop, he saw a person grab a kid in an alley and make a move. Owen was about to intervene, when he thought he saw Batman drop down. After a few moments of observation, he realized it was the blue one instead. Red Hood didn't really know much about Blue Bat. He decided to stay and observe. This would be a good chance to get to know a little about his enemy. He was watching the Bat pound the man's face in to ground hamburger. He couldn't blame the guy for what he was doing. Owen would have taken a bit more time and made it a little more fun. But even Owen's stomach twisted a little, as he remembered the child in the Nightwing looking suit. No sense in scarring the kid at her age. What was the man thinking?
Then she appeared. That red-headed angel of vengeance. For someone who claimed not to be stalking him, she sure kept showing up randomly, wherever he was. Owen watched her break the scene up and then saw them escape to the same rooftop. It would be insane to just stick around with two bats and a sidekick. Owen knew he should leave while he could. Instead, he sat down on an air conditioning unit and waited. After a few moments of letting everyone recover, he broke the silence and waved at them. "Personally, I would have shot the sick bastard. Repeatedly. But only after the kid was out of view. Plenty of time to let her be traumatized later in life."

Letting out a breath she didn't even know she was holding, Nightwing relaxed as she saw her brother come back to himself. She put her hand on her niece's head as she hid behind her. Geez, this was bad. She'd seen the whole thing. Nightwing was a bit disturbed by the whole thing, she couldn't even begin to think how Barby was feeling. He'd scared her, that was for sure.
"That's right, kiddo. We don't do that. And while you get some ice cream, he and I get to discuss why I'm the evil twin, and even I think this was crazy and uncalled for." As Barby finally stepped toward her father, the beaten man groaned. For good measure, Nightwing jabbed him with the electric end of her escrima and picked up his gun. She disassembled the thing and tossed the pieces away, keeping the firing pin just in case anyone got ideas about putting it back together.
She fired off her own line and shot to the roof after them. "Herald, send an ambulance. We're on our way back."
Of course it could never be that simple. No they can't just go home and regroup after something so jarring. There was no way this was a coincidence. She turned around to glare at Red Hood, blocking the touching family moment from his view.
"Nobody asked what you would f*cking do! I really don't have time for your sh*t today asshole! Go...rob a bank or something." she'd been trying to hold back from swearing in front of Barby, but this guy just made her want to let out a string of creative expletives. She really wasn't in the mood to deal with anything right then, least of all him. She pulled a few smoke pellets from her gauntlets and tossed them down, trying to give them time to scatter.

As they got to the roof and he tried to make it up to her his senses picked up on someone else. Someone not being a current threat but everyone knew who Red Hood was and knew his affiliation with the Bats. Sure towards the end they sort of made up, but it's more of a, he agreed not to kill him right away. Barby looked up at the voice and dropped down, going behind JJ. JJ closed his cape around him and stared at him. While he'd opted for Bat style stoicism, Dinah had gone for the Grayson mouth. Of course while JJ was calm and stoic he had one hand on his nunchaku and the other prepared to hold Barby back.
"No, what I did was wrong. Taking a life is not what ANYONE in this family does."
JJ did consider him a loose affiliation of the Bat family. Namely because of the name and apparently he'd been mentored by Jason. Of course he wasn't about to call Hood up and go hit up a bar either. Of course he also wanted Hood off the street. He was a criminal and he was doing terrible things.
"That's enough Nightwing...."
He was trying to take control of this situation. This situation that he'd messed up in the first place. But he wasn't going to let Red Hood make it any worse. As Nightwing released the smoke his instincts kicked in and they fled the scene. He needed to fully get away from here and a fight with Red Hood wouldn't help matters. Could he take Red Hood, especially with his sister's help? Sure, he wasn't at all concerned. But he'd done enough fighting, as was evidenced by the barely conscious bloody man laying in the alley. He fired a line from his fist and pulled himself and Barby up to a higher roof. He knew Dinah wanted to get him alone so she could lay into him, and wasn't looking forward to it. But at the same time, he did deserve it.

There was a quick mental assessment. Blue Bat wasn't completely in his right mind at the moment. That would give Owen an edge if he needed it against him. Nightwing, however, was in her usual state. Which, he knew from experience meant that she was worth at least two or three of him. At least. The commentary about members of the family not killing people stopped him. "Look, point being, I saw the kid was in trouble and I came to check." He looked down at Barby, hiding behind the cape. "You okay, kid?"
Owen paused for a moment at the statement. It was more out of shock than anything else. This was the first time anyone in the Bat Family had acknowledged him as anything but a nuisance. "This family? Wait... I don't remember seeing you at any family reunions. I'm fairly sure I'd recognize someone like you. You stand out a little, what with the ears and all." Nightwing was busy screaming at him.
"Hey, there's a kid present. You could at least pretend to watch your language. She's had enough of a rough day without your mouth." And then the smoke pellets were deployed. Red Hood activated infrared and watched Blue Bat and the girl grapple up to a higher roof. He pulled his own out and decided to follow, since the police were sure to follow. Tonight was not his night. He tried to do something heroic and was catching flack from two people about it. And he hadn't done anything so far. He hadn't even committed a crime yet tonight. He fired the grapnel and swung after them. It had to be a Thursday.

Reigning in her anger as her brother suggested, she remembered Barby was there, and she shouldn't really be swearing. Hearing the same thing she was thinking come out of Red Hood's mouth of all places made her blood boil. Mostly mad at herself though. Because he was right. She just didn't need him pointing it out. She also made a mental note to go find Jason and talk to him, because that damn helmet of his was beginning to be a giant pain in her ass. She wanted to know the specs.
Unlike her brother, she didn't really consider Hood part of the "batfam". He may have been trained, and had some sort of moral code, but she saw him as an opportunist at best. A very confusing, perplexing, pain in the ass opportunist. Who made smoke bombs useless. She fired off her own grapnel, still feeling a slight twinge in her shoulder as she swung. She was aiming for Red Hood, trying to tackle him before he opened his big mouth.
"Look, I get you're trying to do a good for once, and I'm all for that. Really. Just, right now. Not the time. Believe me, I will handle this. And she will be ok. Obviously she isn't right now, but it is in my very best interest that she is. So, and I say this with respect, shove off!"

So clearly Hood didn't consider himself part of the Family. That was fine with him, JJ wasn't exactly Owen's biggest fan anyways. However if he wanted to take the name 'Red Hood' he had to also take the stuff that name brought along with it. One of those things, in JJ's mind, was all affiliations that came with it. It was no different than the chick running around calling herself Robin. She may not be official but she was still a member of the Bat-family. Of course that was something he needed to talk with her about when this was settled. Someone running around as Robin was something that the entire Bat-family was curious about.
When he got to the roof he looked over at Owen and Dinah and watched them argue. He personally didn't care what was going on with them, right now. He was more focused on making sure Barby was ok. Whatever those two had going on could wait. Dinah hadn't brought it up so for all he knew it simply didn't matter to him. Of course the topic of Red Hood would come up when she was done laying into him.
"Nightingale's fine. She knew what was happening and she can defend herself."
Of course he wasn't about to out her powers to Owen, it was time Dinah found out. Barby was good, had been training to hide her powers from everyone. The only one who really knew was JJ. But he knew she'd need better training and was contemplating Jean Grey's Academy. He'd need to investigate it first, make sure they could help and protect her. But so far all signs pointed to something good. They could help her and train her and ensure her powers didn't go evil.
'I knew what Blue Bat wanted and he explained it to me. Besides that guy was a weakling whose only exercise came from running from the police and killing children.'
"Well that's ominous."
She was getting better at reading people, a useful skill for everyone.

After swinging up to the rooftop, and leaving Nightwing behind, Owen stood there looking at Blue Bat and Nightingale, he guessed by the other man's mention. That statement angered Owen. Because basically, Blue Bat had just admitted to using this little girl in a Halloween costume as bait. The sudden urge to pop him in the mouth was extremely strong. Owen took a deep breath and fought the urge.
The child's statement was rather ominous. It really didn't give him much confidence that the kid wasn't already screwed up at her age. Owen was about to open his mouth and say something when he was struck by a bag of bricks claiming to be Nightwing. The tackle hit him broadside and Red Hood tumbled and rolled. When he came to a stop, he just sat there for a moment and took it in. "If you missed me, you could have just said so."
Then Nightwing was saying nice things to him and he was very confused. He took a second to put the pieces together. She wasn't telling him to go away for the usual reasons. She was just as angry about this whole thing as he was right now. Owen didn't really feel like leaving, but he started to weigh his options. He'd have to fight both Nightwing and Blue Bat in all their current rage. And then there was the sidekick variable. This was starting to look like one of those fights were Owen was going to be in a hospital room with his brother.
Red Hood stood up and crossed his arms. "Suppose I don't feel like leaving?"

"I can't miss you if you won't leave." She positioned herself once again between Hood and Blue Bat, trying to keep her eyes on him. She knew with Blue Bat's assistance, she could easily take him down, but there was still the matter of Nightingale being on the roof with them. She needed to get home. Of course Dinah whipped around almost fast enough to impress a speedster when she heard what her brother said.
Hearing the words come from her brother's mouth, filtering them through her mind and comprehending that her niece knew she was going to be used as bait had Dinah seeing red. She completely forgot about the Red Hood for a moment and just let out an angry, rage filled yell at her brother. The urge to pop him in the mouth was much stronger for her; her feet moved of their own accord and her hand was balled up into a fist and next to her head before she decided not to actually throw it. She flexed her fingers out of the fist and gripped the top of her head in frustration.
"Are you KIDDING ME?! I DON'T GIVE A GOD DAMN IF YOU THINK SHE WAS SAFE! THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN RULES! WE HAD THEM AND SHE HAS THEM AND SHE HASN'T PASSED THE DAMN TEST! And that is the LEAST of your problems here!!!!" Dinah had always had her emotions running just under the surface and she was usually able to keep them in check when she was in costume but this...this was too much. It was too personal. And she was furious. Beyond furious really. Barby was his daughter, and she idolized him. Of course she would do whatever he told her to do and think it was a good idea. And the fact she was calling people weaklings so freely troubled her almost as much as her being used as bait. She took a deep breath, rage still radiating from every bone in her body.
"Nightingale, you and I will have a long discussion about what exactly is wrong with everything you just said later. The fact that we're not even sure if that is the guy you were trying to catch is A PROBLEM!" She turned back to glare at Blue Bat. "You. You're grounded. Done with this case. Batman and I will handle it from now on, and if you go anywhere near it, I WILL make you think you're a five year old girl for my own amusement and damn the consequences. There's more than enough of those to go around right now."
To be honest, she had forgotten Hood was there, for the most part. She knew, situationally, that he was present, that there was another person on that roof with them. But he was so far down her shit list at the moment, she would have written him off as a bystander until he opened his mouth. Then she turned to focus all of her rage at him. Her body radiated anger even though her voice seemed much more calm as she spoke. "I don't really care what you feel like."

After taking a moment, he uprighted and steadied himself. Nightwing was a ball of rage. Owen watched her wheel on Blue Bat and take it all out on him. He cringed. The longer he was here, the more Owen was convinced he was just butting in on a family thing. He just stood there quietly. Owen wasn't family. At least not their family. Blue Bat could use his pretend Bat-family BS on Red Hood, but this was a flesh and blood thing.
As Nightwing snapped at him for his stupid comment, Red Hood leaned in so his hood was almost touching her face. "I'm going to leave now. You have your hands full with your family and the last thing you need is to deal with me, Songbird. But just remember, that I actually tried to do something heroic here and was only met with hostility for it."
Red Hood looked over at Nightingale as he withdrew his grapnel from his belt. "You do everything Nightwing tells you. She's the boss here. And I don't think she's going to tolerate disobedience." Then he looked over to Blue Bat. "You might as well too. She hits hard. But you probably know that already. God have mercy on you. I'm not drawing anymore fire for this." He fired the grapnel and shook his head.
"Toodles." Red Hood swung off into the Gotham night.

JJ watched as his sister tackled Red Hood. Kind of random but JJ wasn't dense enough to see that there was a history there. It was definitely something worth looking into later on. Well, when he wasn't the one on trial. He knew he was in trouble and he knew he needed to look at it from another point of view. They didn't know what he knew or what he'd prepared. They didn't know what Barby was capable of and that was ok with him. He didn't want Barby's powers being general knowledge, not yet at least. While he had no intention of manipulating her, he knew others might not be so honorable. He simply stared calmly at Dinah as she yelled at him. He knew only saying something would make it worse. But then he laid in on Barby and that wasn't something he could stand. JJ stepped in front of her, trying to shield her.
'You will leave her alone. She followed my lead like any side kick does. She examined the same evidence I did and came to the same conclusion. How many times did we follow our father or Grandfather to a dead end, but followed none the less? She got a good look at his face when he grabbed her and gave me the signal. Yes, I went over board and that is on me. But do not dare to bring her in on this as well. That will not happen.'
He said calmly. He also wasn't about to let the case go either. He knew it'd take more than something like that put him away. He'd looked into him and knew he'd get away again. He'd been arrested a few times and was always released with files destroyed, or attempted to.
'Nightingale was doing good, doing everything she was supposed to. This will likely throw off his pattern however.'
He said beginning to think. He wasn't about to let Dinah tell him he couldn't go and finish this case. He'd started it and he would see that this guy was put away behind bars for the rest of his life. He glanced over at Red Hood and nodded his head.
'Careful Hood. When she gets angry she gets dangerous. I'd do as she says.'
He said before watching him swing away.

Nightwing seethed, listening to Blue Bat. But a roof top wasn't really the best place to have this conversation. The Clock tower would be better, less ears to hear everything. She also wouldn't have to watch everything she was saying, and maybe, just maybe, she could get some sense into her brother. Her fists clenched again when he said that Barby was just being a good side kick. That was the other problem. She was too damn young to be a side kick! And she would most definitely be talking with her niece about all of this, just when she was a bit more rational and calm. It wasn't her fault her father was being an idiot.
Her jaw clenched as Red Hood took off into the night. She was pretty sure she knew what his notion of heroic would have been had Barby actually been in serious trouble, but that didn't mean he was wrong. Part of her was upset he left before she could (calmly) explain that she actually appreciated his concern. Then the rest of her said to shut the hell up, he was a mercenary who sold his skills to the highest bidder and she'd been staring too long at the computer screen earlier. Still, it had been nice to have someone at least vocally back her up, since JJ had turned off his comm and their dad couldn't yell at him right then and there.
"Throw off his pattern?!" She tossed one of her escrima at him, knowing he would more than likely catch it, but it felt good to throw something at him. "He'll be in a damn hospital for weeks! Because you can't control yourself. That's it. Let's go. We need to get off the streets before you have any more bright ideas about how to use little girls for bait and I have to knock some more sense into you." She waited, none too patiently for them to go first. She would not be leading them there only for him to ditch her at the last second because he felt like it.

She was angry and personally he didn't care. He had his own issues going on and an angry sister was extremely low on the list. Primarily because, well, she was always angry with him about something. It tended to happen at all times about anything. He had a feeling though there was something deeper there. However he himself just didn't feel like actually looking into it. Primarily because there were some cases he didn't want to solve.
He caught the escrima stick and twirled it absent mindedly as he listened to her. He had no desire to go and have her yell at him. Of course he also knew it was pretty much unavoidable. It was going to happen one way or another so it was best to just deal with it.
"C'mon munchkin."
He said before picking her up in one arm and firing a line out of his arm. He began to swing away into the night, holding Barby close. Of course she also had the means to cling to him easily. Then again his suit was designed with secret hand holds in it for her to hold onto. But then again there were numerous aspects in both his suit and her's for her safety. He landed on the ledge of the clock tower and set her down before handing her Dinah's Escrima stick.
'Why don't you go put this with the rest of our equipment while Daddy and Auntie Nightwing talk."
He said before slipping inside while she ran off in another direction he went the other way. He knew that she was likely following him, and close behind, ensuring he didn't escape. He pulled his mask off and sighed.
"Your silent steps are getting better Didi."
He said before sitting down in a chair. He ran his fingers through his hair and sighed.
"Alright Didi, go for it."
