Walt waited with actual patience as Marty spoke his mind.
"Of course I do, pal. You may be right. But after our replacements are trained- once we're not babysitting anymore- I can't see a reason to stay. Maybe we can trust Rapidash, and maybe we can't. But we can trust Lydia to keep an eye on him, and the newbies as well. She always has been the nurturer anyway."
Walt didn't lose focus on his argument. He looked at Marty and said decisively, "We have to go, buddy. If not now, then right after we train the younglings. Kiddy's almost ready. And the others... we won't rush them, and we'll make sure we can leave the Tower in their hands." It was true that Kid Flash was the one with whom Walt had spent the most time, and he really did trust his partner. But it was also true that he wouldn't be receiving an invitation to join Marty and Waly. He was, after all, still a kid (albeit an extraordinary one.)
"So that's it. We'll have to wait for your arm to heal before we... 'audition'... anyway. How long will that take? And we should tell the others. Especially Lyds."

"I suppose you're right. We can't always be putting everyone else above our own ambitions. We'll get Lydia's honest opinion on him. They work a little more closely together. She'd be the one to ask." Marty knew in his heart that Walt was right. After the newer members were trained, they should move on. But Marty was hesitant to leave the Titans. In the beginning, he didn't know if he wanted to join them. Now, he wasn't sure he wanted to leave them. He'd done a full 180.
"You're right, Walt. I just don't know. I find it hard to leave now that I've gotten used to it. And before you say something stupid, I meant the team. Not just her. So don't start that again. But you're right. And as long as we make sure that they're ready before we leave. It's probably for the best."
Walt's comment about the healing made Marty groan. "Probably a few weeks. Not all of us can heal like a speedster can. Some of us are relegated to healing at the normal passage of time. I'm going to have to get checked out and get some meds for it. Well, there's a meeting in a couple days. I'll bring it up with her if I can get her alone."

"That's a plan. "
Things were changing for them, and Walt was ready. Eager. For generations, this had been the way. He and Marty were going to make their way the way their fathers had, together. But more importantly... they were growing up.
"I'd take the pain if I could, as you know. But... the least I could do, I've done." So then Walt disappeared, and returned holding a plastic sleeve of bagels. He held them out, smiling.
"To replace the one I ate."
But then he dropped the bagels and grabbed Marty, hugging him fiercely, minding his arm, and wishing he really could trade his working arm for Marty's injured one.
For once, he didn't have any words. So he just released Marty, held him at arm's length just long enough for his friend to recognize his smile, said, "G'night, buddy," and disappeared.
He only went downstairs, to Marty's room, long enough to make sure that his friend didn't have to worry about the twelve-page assignment for his literature class. Then he was back in his own home.
He was asleep before Marty next spoke.

"Well, it's a loose approximation of one, anyway."
The two boys were becoming men. Growing into the mantles of those who came before them. Marty only hoped that they could make their parents proud. "I know you would, Walt. But I think you've done more than your share today. We'll use the plan tomorrow. Sleep would be useful for both of us now. Thanks for saving my bacon."
"Breakfast is always appreciated." The hug was unexpected. Marty was not often a hugging kind of person. He just hugged back, minding his own wounded arm. He'd go home and see a doctor tomorrow with his parents for it. There were no more words to exchange, other than: "G'night, pal." But he had a feeling that Walt hadn't even heard it before he blurred away.
Grabbing the bagels, Marty phased down into his room and deactivated his costume. He threw the bagels on his small counter and then went to grab some pajamas. He opened the drawer. Everything in it was hot pink. He checked the other drawers and closet. The only thing not tampered with was his leather jacket.
"Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that his sister kissed me after all..."
