Anything Else: James is covered by scars from stab wounds, gunshots, burns and other injuries that he has received over the course of his career.
Equipment and Weapons:
Costumes:
Winter Soldier MK III: An upgraded variant of the Winter Soldier costume, James’ father wore. The costume incorporates Nomex, Kevlar and lightweight titanium alloys. This makes it resistant to fire, slashing damage, small caliber bullets, and extreme temperature changes.
Winter Soldier MK IV: Similar to the MK III, this costume was upgraded to include a prototype impact mesh webbing of James' own design throughout the suit, as well as a small personal cloaking module to assist with missions where a more subtle approach was required. The original mesh was designed to help him assist in the training of his younger sister and still allow him to survive a hit. It was very buggy and prone to failure in the beginning, often overloading and sometimes shorting out his cloak as well. Eventually, the system was perfected and found its way into his everyday wardrobe.
Bucky Cap MK II: When James took up the mantle of Captain America, he redesigned his father's uniform and incorporated new technologies in it to keep it current. Much like his Winter Soldier costume the suit incorporates updated Nomex and Kevlar variants as well as various lightweight titanium alloys. The suit also features an impact web mesh that runs throughout the suit. This mesh absorbs kinetic impacts and displaces it throughout the costume, allowing James to take impacts that would kill a normal person. The mesh was originally designed and tested in his Mark IV Winter Soldier Costume. Though the original prototype was very troublesome and bug ridden, the current version has saved his life on several occasions.
Equipment:
Captain America's shield: The shield is a concave disk 2.5 feet in diameter, weighing 12 pounds. It is made of a unique Vibranium-steel alloy created during World War 2. The shield saw action with Steve Rogers throughout his career and also during Bucky Barnes brief tenure as Cap. The shield was gifted to James after his failed OP in an attempt to push him towards taking up Cap's mantle and out of his "dark" world of spycraft.
Captain America's Energy shield: a photonic shield (able to redirect kinetic energy, emit energy blasts, and morph into a staff). Phil Coulson was given this device by Steve Rogers early on. He kept the original and built a new model for James with updated technology. He passed this model on to James as a part of the Winter Soldier gear, but James rarely saw a need for it before taking up Cap's mantle.
Powers:
Artificially Enhanced Physiology: James has been granted enhanced physiology thanks to his mother passing on the enhancements given to her by the Red Room’s variant of the Super-Soldier Serum.
Peak Human Strength: James’ physical strength is at the peak level of natural physical limits of a man of his height, weight and build. He is capable of lifting up to 1100 lbs.
Peak Human Speed: James’ is as fast as a human can be without being considered superhuman. He can run at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour or higher and has run a mile in 73 seconds when pushed.
Peak Human Agility: James’ natural agility is heightened to a level greater than that of an Olympic gold medalist. He can coordinate his body with balance, flexibility, and dexterity easily.
Peak Human Reflexes: James’ reaction time has been enhanced to near superhuman levels. This has helped him escape tough situations many times over throughout his career.
Peak Human Durability: James’ durability is enhanced by the serum in his blood. This means that his bones and muscles are denser than usual, making him able to take more punishment than the average human. This durability has helped James survive repeated attempts on his life over his career.
Peak Human Senses: James’ senses are enhanced to near superhuman levels.
Peak Human Immune System: James can be infected by disease, but the serum in his blood has even enhanced his immune system to the point where he can recover from most of the normal aliments in a day or two. Severe aliments take three or four days to recover.
Extended Longevity: The Super Soldier serum variant in James’ blood stream will cause his aging to slow down. If he lives that long, he will be able to live much longer than the average human life span. The length of his natural life span is something not even SHIELD scientists have been able to figure out.
Skills:
Master Martial Artist: James was trained from an early age by his mother and father. After their passing, James continued to study under Phil Coulson and Nick Fury Jr until he became a master of various styles. He is a master of Karate, Judo, Aikido, Savate, Boxing and some Kung Fu.
Expert Marksman: James is an expert in the use of projectile weapons, including various firearms and knives.
Skilled Shield Fighter: James has been training with a shield replica provided by Coulson since he was a boy. Since James wanted to be Captain America as a boy, Coulson thought training with a shield would help James connect with the lighter side of his late father's legacy.
Skilled Acrobat: He is an Olympic level athlete and acrobat capable of many difficult acrobatic feats.
Advanced Scout: James was taught by Fury and Coulson to be an expert in stealth and concealment which makes him an ideal scout.
Multi-lingual: Thanks to his parents, James is fluent in English, Russian, German, Japanese, and a little French. He has an ear for languages and is able learn them rather quickly thanks to co-opted SHIELD teaching tools.
Expert Spy: James is an expert spy thanks in part to the training regimen put together by Agent Phil Coulson, Nick Fury and his son, Nick Fury Jr. The three of them have been training James since he was sixteen to be a skilled infiltration operative. He is skilled in stealth, demolitions, survival, deducing other persons ways of thinking and other fields designed to assist in this role.
Expert Assassin: Though usually a last resort, James is a fully trained assassin. He has been trained in various assassination techniques to eliminate those who would threaten the free world. He has been trained in the use of garrotes, bladed weapons, poisons and various other ways to remove “obstacles” in his path.
Talented Hacker: James has been taught to hack into computer systems with the highest levels of government encryption. His mother made a game of it for him when he was eight years old. By the age of 10 he was hacking into the CIA for fun. He has only continued to brush up on his skills as he got older. His hacker alias is Archangel.
Musician: James likes to relieve his stress by playing the guitar or harmonica. He has been playing since he was a teenager and likes to think of himself as decent.
Weaknesses: (3 minimum)
1.) You’re Only Human - Even with all the enhancements granted to him by the super-soldier serum variant in James’ bloodstream, he is still a human and can be killed by all the usual means.
2.) There’s No Blood in My Alcohol System - James has been known to drink a heavily in his downtime to help him cope with the traumas of things he has seen and done in his life. This has led to him getting into many dangerous situations
3.) Shellshock - James spent time as a prisoner in the clutches of a Chechen terrorist cell for a month. During this time he was tortured and beaten. Though he did not break, it left many psychological scars that James still has trouble dealing with.
4. )I Keep Telling You, I’m Not Obsessed - James is obsessed with finding out who murdered his parents. He has been searching for leads and putting together clues since he was 12. If he hears so much as a whisper about it, he has been known to rush off in pursuit of a lead. He will not rest until he has found who killed them and put a stop to them.
5.) I’ve Got a Secret - James keeps his life and activities as the Winter Soldier a secret from his sister, Lydia. He has worked very hard to keep her from finding out some of the more distasteful things he’s had to do to keep her and the rest of the world safe.

THE REST
Personality:
James is very serious most times. He has been known to use sarcasm and dark humor to defuse tense situations. He can be very gung ho and quick to rush in without a plan, much like his father did (Bucky plans, anyone?). Though for the more dangerous operations, he has been known to plan out every detail down to the last second if others are involved in order to keep them safe.
James blames himself for the death of his parents and usually manages to find creative ways to blame himself if he loses anyone on missions. Because of this, he tends to work alone whenever possible. This makes him seem like he is anti-social, but he does it mostly to protect others. His sister likes to remind him that he doesn’t have to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, hoping it will sink in one day.
History:
After Bucky and Natasha encountered Leo Novokov and Natasha’s memory was damaged, they parted ways. Bucky continued to look for redemption as the Winter Soldier and try to remove left over threats from the Cold War. Eventually, Doctor Strange managed to restore Natasha’s memories of Bucky and they were reunited. Eventually, they managed to patch things up and rekindle their romance. After years of living together, Natasha found herself pregnant. Previously, this was thought impossible for her, due to the effects of her super-soldier serum. What no one counted on was Bucky’s exposure to the Infinity Formula actually made Bucky more virile. Unfortunately, Natasha’s body began to reject her embryo due to her enhanced immune system.
The doctors ran test after test and determined that James had Natasha’s super-soldier serum variant running through his veins. Luckily, medical science had advanced enough by this point that SHIELD scientists were able to build off of this to create a treatment was able to keep James Jr. alive to term. As James grew older, he seemed to be very frail and sickly for the first four years of his life. Around age five, his health seemed to take an upturn. James’ health increased and he became a very active child, much to his parents delight. As James grew, his mother and father taught him various skills to help him survive in the event their enemies caught up with them.
When James was 12, Bucky and Natasha’s luck finally ran out. The Infinity Formula that Nick Fury had given Bucky to help him survive the injuries he sustained against Red Skull’s daughter when she was possessed by the Skadi, finally began to break down. Bucky did his best to hide his declining health from his family, but he couldn’t keep it secret from Black Widow for very long. Their past finally caught up with them one night. Enemies managed to stage an attack on the Barnes family. Bucky did his best to fight their assailants, but finally, his failing health got the best of him and the Winter Soldier fell in battle. Natasha managed to get James to the safe room they had set up, and attempted to draw the attackers away.
James stayed hidden in the safe room for what seemed like days. Eventually, a man in a flag costume opened the door. James knew from his parents stories this could only be one man. Captain America, the legend, in the flesh. James, still in shock, just stood there in quiet awe. Cap removed his mask and told him to call him Steve. He promised that he would find the people responsible for this and bring them to justice. Steve took him to Nick Fury, who promised James that he had a good place for him where he’d be safe. Fury put James in the care of Phil Coulson, a trusted friend of his son.
Coulson did his best to raise James, but he became somewhat of a problem child for some time, until a young girl was brought to live with them. Lydia Danvers had lost her parents as well. Knowing the pain that she was facing, James decided that he was going to take it upon himself to look out for the girl and eventually adopted the role of older brother figure for her. He did his best to make sure that she was safe, going as far as to complete his training under Coulson and Fury that he started at age 15. James decided that training would allow him to gain the skills to keep Lydia safe and then decided that this would give him the edge he needed to avenge his parents. After he graduated high school, he decided to go off and pursue his parents’ killers. Coulson wouldn’t hear of it though. He told James that if he wanted to catch them, then he would do it his way. Coulson finished training James and equipped him with an upgraded version of his father’s Winter Soldier uniform upgraded with modern SHIELD tech.
James served as Coulson’s operative, roaming the world as the new Winter Soldier. He did what he can to stop threats to the safety of the world before they have the chance to destroy the hard won freedoms his parents helped create. He’s done some horrible things for good reasons. But the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
After an OP went bad and James was almost killed, he retired his Winter Soldier identity. After months of retraining and therapy (physical and mental), he was prepared to take it up again, but Phil and Lydia convinced him to pick up the mantle of Captain America instead. James was reluctant to try to fill Cap's shoes, but his family argued that the world needed Cap and his unique physiology made him the best person for the job.

"Just once, I'd like them to not run away when they see the costume. Days like this I miss the old one." The shield bounced off the walls of the alley way and smashed into the heads of two HYDRA thugs, dropping them. James dropped off the fire escape behind them and grabbed one of the stunned henchmen. "Tell me what I want to know and we won't have to do this the hard way."
The Hydra agent in his hands looked up at him. "Wha... What do you want?"
"Information, son. And you're going to help me." Cap smiled down at him, trying not to break character. "I need to know why HYDRA and AIM are working together. What are you people doing?" The Hydra thug looked at him, smirking, and yelled, "Hail Hydra" before chomping down on a false tooth. He dropped the thug and sighed. James looked over to the unconscious goon, glaring. "Well, at least one of them lived. That's something. How'd I do?"
"You mean aside from hamming it up? Not bad, I suppose. You went a little too down to Earth on the character though. Calling him son? You're never going to get them to take you seriously if you talk like that."
"Noted, Phil. Or was that Lydia's input?"
"Yes."
"Fine. Just send a unit to pick this guy up. We'll need to keep him sedated, so we can get that tooth out. Someone is going to talk to me here. One way or the other."
