Since Walt had opted to be the distraction, Marty fired ring blasts the Hulk creature. The blasts hit his green hide and detonated with little effect. Marty wasn't expecting that to work. It was just a delaying tactic. They just had to buy time until the stuff wore off.
Marty watched Walt skip out across the water like a stone. Time for plan b. Emerald light surrounded the Lantern before forming into a construct form of the Hulk around him. Green Lantern charged the monster, hitting him with the full force of the construct's strength. The pseudo hulk grabbed the construct's wrist and twisted. Marty saw the construct crack and then shatter.
The monster grabbed Green Lantern and squeezed his arm. Marty screamed as he heard bones crack. He couldn't focus his will over the pain. He was in trouble.

As Walt watched the monstrosity lift his best friend high into the air, and as he listened to Marty's screams, he was reminded of something his father had said to him. Protect who you love, he had said. And if anybody… anybody compromises that… you make sure they’re still bleeding when they wake up. Just so they don’t forget.
Walter West turned his back on the pseudo-Hulk lifting Marty into the air and started running.
He took several laps around the Earth. In the brief moments it took him to do so, he considered the damage he would do if he pulled this off. He hadn't ever done this before- not on anything that breathed. Continents blew past him in the form of certain patterns of colors and sounds. In a few seconds after he started running, the cacophony was so intense that it might have paralyzed anyone else. It made him smile.
Milliseconds before returning to Coast City, he pulled back his arm and leapt. If his aim was right, the beast would land somewhere in the uninhabited plains of Africa, still in Hulk form. If not, he might break his hand or kill the human inside the Hulkish exterior. But Marty's screams still echoed in his head, and so, grimacing, he shotgunned his curled fist into the torso of the beast.

Marty was overcome with pain. He couldn't focus enough to make his ring work. Which, was slightly problematic seeing as how a being powered by anger was directly next to him. He decided it might be time to make peace with his maker and several others when he heard a crash. He looked up and the Hulkling was gone. There was only one blur fast enough to make that work. Walt must have just used his special attack. Marty groaned. "Flash used Infinite Mass Punch. It was super-effective, bastard."
He looked down and took stock of himself. The uniform and mask were intact. Marty was fairly sure the ring was doing that all on its own. He tried to force his will into the ring and mend his wounds and nothing happened except a few fizzles of emerald sparks. "Ring, report."
"Radius and Ulna are fractured in multiple places. Tissue trauma is high. Compound fracture. Lantern in shock. Recommend medical attention."
"Great. Let me know if you have anything else useful." Marty mumbled as his vision started dimming from the pain. "No other recommendations currently." He would have glared at the ring if it didn't take so much of his precious energy. As Walt reappeared, Marty looked at him. "Flash, I need you to fix it. Now! No hospitals."

Walt was panicking. With a tortured expression and as much speed as he could muster, he turned and sprinted towards Coast City University. He returned to Marty's side in a fraction of a second, dropping thirty or so books as well as a sling on the ground near their feet. He looked up at Marty. "Not a lot of Tolkien, but the medical selection isn't half bad." He put his hand on Marty's back and lowered him gently to the ground. "Alright, buddy. So, from what I could gather from my little study session... I'm gonna need 'ta set the bone. Shouldn't be too hard, right? Remember when we used to play Operation? And... I always lost..." He gulped and stopped short.
"Alright... listen, Greenback... in the spirit of full disclosure... I have not completed my doctorate. Never done this before. So if things go bad... you should know... I ate the last bagel in your room." Then he vibrated his hand fast enough to phase through Marty's skin without causing him pain and, as gently as he could, replaced the fractured bones in Marty's arm to their original position. Then, before Marty could scream or even blink, Walt had the sling around his arm, set high in a resting position.
Walt exhaled slowly. Standing, he lifted Marty to his feet. He looked at his friend with true concern and only the hint of a smile. In a gentle voice, he asked, "Hey, how d'ya feel, huh? Not too fast standing up."
Marty didn't need to know about that fractured rib Walt had incurred as a result of being sucker-punched by the Hulkling. The same went for the five broken knuckles on Walt's right hand. With his ability to heal, there wasn't much a good forty-hour nap couldn't take care of. In fact, despite the massive fist-shaped bruise that took up most of his torso, there wasn't much wrong with Walt at all as he watched his friend rise from the ground.

There was a blur and Walt was gone. That was good. Marty didn't want anyone to see him throw up the slice of pizza he just ate. There was really no dignified way to lose your lunch. And then Walt was back. Well, you can't have everything. He let Walt lean him back. That was slightly better. His eyes were blurred by tears. Walt mentioned something about Operation. "You... I used to beat you in Operation all the time. Where's a doctor when I need one?"
Mention of eating the last bagel and having no doctorate, made him roll his eyes. Marty looked up. "I was saving that for breakfast, you son of a bitch. In the interest of full disclosure... I kissed your sister once and she liked it. So, if things go bad at least you can live with that image for the rest of your life." He watched Walt vibrate and closed his eyes, trying not to pass out. He'd let the speedster work his magic.
Marty stood up with Walt's help a few minutes later. He looked down at it. It felt marginally better but still hurt. "I feel like my wrist and arm are broken. How should I feel? At least things seem like they're semi put together." He tried to put his will into his ring and was still too unfocused to make that work. He turned and looked at the Flash. "We need to interrogate that man that you took to jail. We need to get more information on what just happened here. This could be the lead we need to crack open the case for Captain America. This could be our ticket to the big time."
Marty tried to focus his will and override the pain. This was their big break. This could get them both into the Avengers or the Justice League. It would be their day, broken arm or no broken arm.

Walt's face dropped its signature smirk.
A second later later he was in his sister Iris's room. His face and tone were displeased. "We'll talk later."
Two seconds later he had replaced all of Marty's clothes in his dorm room with hot pink variants of his original clothing.
Three seconds later, he had composed what, in his opinion, was a rather lovely sonnet declaring his undying love for Lydia Danvers, in Marty's hand (which he had become quite adept at replicating over the years) and left it on her bed in Titans Tower.
Then he was back with Marty at the docks. As riled as he was, he was relieved, more than anything, at seeing his friend on his feet. "'Hey, Walt! Good job becoming a medical professional in five seconds, Walt! Thanks for saving my life at the drop of a hat, as usual, WALT!' No? None of that? Fine. Good." His smile was patient, even slightly amused, as he let himself relax by going off on his friend. "Y'know, you're the expert, but as an aspiring pilot, maybe it's in your best interests to try to stay a little farther from the ground next time."
After his jeers, he did consider what Marty had said. "Alright. If you think you're up for it. I'll go pick him up." A moment later, the man they first saw at the Port was lying in the dirt in front of them. Walt turned to Marty, and with an eye on his cast, said with a smile, "How about I be Good Cop this time?"

Flash disappeared for a moment and then reappeared. Marty was slightly concerned but then Walt went into a rant. "Hey, Walt. Good job. Now stop stroking your ego for a second, my arm is throbbing. Thanks for doing what I knew you could do best." Marty forced a grin and rolled his eyes. "If you're done now, I'd like to take a minute to scream, since it feels like I stuck my arm in a steamroller."
"Noted. Fly higher next time. Maybe I'll bring you with. We can see what your house looks like from orbit. I'm willing to bet we can get that ego to make low earth orbit with just a little extra will." It was good natured, but there was an undertone of annoyance. Mostly because Marty's arm was on fire. He was going to have to do something about that. He focused his will and tried to generate an anesthetic halo around his arm so he could think for a minute. The pain lessened a bit and his thoughts cleared.
"Yes, let's bring that lovely gentleman back." When the man appeared on the ground at his feet, Marty grinned at Walt. "Really? Is it my birthday?" He focused his will into his ring and two hulk constructs picked up the fallen man. Marty willed a bubble around the man and himself. "So, let's have a chat."
"I'm not telling you anything, mask."
"Let's try this again... Do you see this ring?" Marty gestured to the one on his hand. The man nodded. "I can split an atom with this ring. It doesn't take much energy, just a bit of effort. Now, funny story. I can survive and it won't go outside this bubble. How do you think your chances of surviving a nuclear blast are? Just out of idle curiosity. I'm just wondering if your suit can let you survive that." Marty's ring sparked and the man screamed. "Let's try this again..."

Walt wore his brightest, most good-natured smile as he knocked a fist against Marty's construct bubble. It produced a dull thud, meaning that Marty was most probably joking about it being able to withstand an artificial A-bomb, which wasn't surprising, given the circumstances.
Vibrating his head through Marty's construct (which would ordinarily be impossible had they not practiced this routine so many times,) Walt beamed at the man who was literally shaking with fear. "Just checking in! Lemme know if you decide on the easy way. Hey, has he told you about the A-bomb trick yet? It's pretty rad in real life. I mean, you would obviously hate it. You and most of Coast City... I can tell you your buddy Bruno did." At this point he pointed a finger over his shoulder, directing the man's attention to a pattern of ashes he had collected and arranged into the figure of a silhouette burned into the ground. Obviously, that wasn't Bruno- Bruno, as far as Walt new was wandering the coast of the Nile- but his trick worked regardless.
The man's eyes lit up with fear. "Jesus... Bruno..." As Walt pretended to turn and exit the bubble, the criminal folded desperately. "Alright- alright!! I'll talk- please! I'll say anything."
Walt and Marty shared a satisfied smile. "I love the soft ones," Walt said.

"Bruno broke my arm. I was not happy with him. Now, Bruno won't be breaking anything with anyone." Marty smiled darkly. Walt and he had done this enough that Walt knew all the signs and how to back Marty's play for this little routine they did. Marty threatened to nuke the criminal and Flash just sort of phased through to ask questions. There was a moment there where Walt was telling the thug about how Marty vaporized Bruno and pointed over to the staged collection of ashes. He had to compliment the speedster for his ability to stage a fake vaporization.
"Flash, why don't you get a cup of coffee and a few dozen pieces of pie. I'm going to see what I can get out of this guy." And on cue, Walt started to exit the bubble. The man screamed and promised he'd tell them anything. "Then sing me a song, little bird. I might get bored and lose focus. You don't want me to lose focus."
Over the next ten minutes, the thug outlined that he and Bruno had been hired by a third party to verify the shipments were genuine. If they were, then their employer would deposit a rather hefty sum into both their accounts. This shipment was set to be distributed across the country to various AIM cells and then sold to anyone who would pay for the privilege to have superpowers. For those that could afford it, this would be a game changer. Anyone's hired help would have the ability to take on the heavy hitters from any team. Marty floated there, recording the entire confession. All that mattered now was recording it and making sure it found its way to Cap. Lydia would make sure of it.
Marty dropped the bubble and found that the effort to sustain it was a bit more than he expected. He was a bit tired. "You've done a fine job. Now, the nice Flash is going to take you back to jail. You'll tell them everything. Otherwise, I'm going to visit you and you go back in the bubble for a very brief visit." The man swallowed painfully and nodded.

Walt had him in his cell at the nearest precinct in a second. In a moment of kindness, he even left a pack of playing cards and a chocolate bar lying on his cot. What could it hurt? He cooperated.
Next, he made a quick trip to Africa, zigzagging until he spotted a familiar figure lying in the wastes. Bruno was back to his human form, lying face down in an utterly deserted stretch of land. He was severely sunburned, and when the Flash checked, his heartbeat was slowed. Good, he thought bitterly. He's lucky I don't reach into his arm and tear out the bones... Instead, he rushed him back to the same cell as his friend from the Port. He felt another moment of softness, wondering if the two men would be relieved to see each other alive. They'll have to share the chocolate bar, he thought with a small smile.
Back at the Port, he looked hard at Marty. "Bruno says 'hi'." He clapped his hands, loosing a few grains of sand from his palms. "So what's next? You want me to get Captain A on the line? Or maybe you just want to rest. It is a school night," he finished smugly.

The few moments Marty was by himself gave him some time to gather his thoughts. He didn't want to directly call Captain America. He knew that the good Captain occasionally wanted to crack him upside the head and Marty was fairly sure that he would get a talking to for interfering in things. He'd probably just give the info to Lydia. It would be easier than anything else. Plus maybe it would help get her in the good graces of the Avengers. She wouldn't be a Titan forever. It would work out in her favor then. Marty didn't always need to be mean to her. Walt was suddenly back.
"Oh, good. Tell Bruno that I hope his stay is pleasant if you see him again." There was a pause. "No, I don't want to bring it directly to Cap. You know how he gets when we start fumbling around in his investigations. I'll bring it to Captain Marvel. Let her bring the info to him. She can choose what to do with it."
Marty looked around the port and then down at an empty hypo vial that Bruno dropped. He scanned it with his ring. There wasn't enough of the substance inside to make an ID. Marty looked up at Walt. "It is a school night and I did just have my arm broken. But suppose we find the rest of this stuff and find out where it comes from? I'm willing to bet that my ring is worth a dozen or so SHIELD science labs and even STAR Labs can't beat it. That kind of information could be our ticket to the big time." He gave Flash a grin. "Think about it... We'd be able to tell Cap where this stuff came from before SHIELD did. That should earn us consideration if we ever wanted to be Avengers."

Walt wondered at that. Did he want to be an Avenger, or in the League. He still didn't know. He liked the Teen Titans- perhaps not enough to stay, but enough to consider what it would be like to say goodbye. He shook off his thoughts... those were for later.
He grinned. "Alright! Work your magic." Walt leaned against the nearest container and slid his back down it until he was sitting. He paused. "Hey, is that what you want, man? To be an Avenger, or a part of the Justice League?" It was something Walt had been wondering about himself for a while, and that meant that it was just as important what Marty wanted. The one thing Walt knew about it was that he wasn't even half of the Flash without his friend.
He got up and started pacing. "I mean, we could do some real good there. There are always bigger differences to be made. Right? And I'm sure it would earn you some serious extra credit or something," he joked. He added a nervous smile. This was a big decision.

The ring hummed slightly as an emerald scanning field expanded outward and began looking for traces of the hypo technology inside it. While there was only trace amounts of the drug left, the combination of the two would lead to the shipping container containing the product. He let the ring continue the scan while he looked over at Walt. "I don't know what I want. I just know that if I decide, I'd like them to at least think twice before they laughed me out." It was true. Marty just liked having options. And this stacked the deck for him.
He could feel the ring, tingling and started to walk towards where the readings were coming from. "Well, yeah. There are always differences to be made on every team. I suppose I just like to make sure that when something like this is considered, they look and see that we've got potential. It's harder for Cap or Batman to turn us away when we can say we did something like break their case for them. I'm not saying we have to do either. It's just nice to stack the odds in our favor if we ever decide to, you know?"
His ring had identified two shipping containers with the same traces that his ring detected. A pair of construct bolt cutters, cut the bolt seals and then four construct hands opened the doors to the containers. Inside, they were stacked with pallets full of metal boxes, containing what Marty knew to be the drug that they had just seen. He let out a low whistle. "Well, Flash, old buddy, I'd say you and I just hit the jackpot."

Walt was gleeful, running between the boxes in a blur to remove the lids, confirming what Marty said. He was right. There were hundred, maybe thousands of vials contained within them. Looking up, he asked, "Well, let's find out where these came from. There's bound to be more. I can't wait to tell where these were headed... this feels big."
Walt was earnestly eager to find whatever lab was producing the stuff. This was the biggest case he'd ever been on, and he was ecstatic. It wasn't just a chance to bring down what was shaping up to be the biggest drug ring in the city, or the chance to make his dad proud. This was a chance to see firsthand the kind of things he could do if he were a big-leaguer. He jumped from foot to foot, waiting for Marty to run his diagnostics.

As Walt opened the boxes, Marty moved to the first one and scanned it with his ring. An emerald view screen popped up with all sorts of information. Some he understood, some he knew he'd need several advanced degrees in Chemistry for. At least he was recording all the data on the ring. Someone smarter than him could figure it out. Or Walt could have his Doctorate in Chemistry in about 15 minutes or so and could tell him. "This is very big. This could change everything."
"Well, as near as I can figure, someone has figured out a way to replicate certain aspects of meta powered DNA. The formula looks to be unstable from what my ring says. That would explain why the powers are so much weaker than the originals and why they burn out instead of sticking around. The drug literally breaks down after a certain point."
The analysis showed that most of the chemicals were Earth made, but the ring recognized at least two extraterrestrial compounds and one other compound that it couldn't identify. That made Marty stop and pause. The ring knew everything that the Guardians of the Universe knew. If there was something that the ring couldn't identify, then that usually meant that it was some sort of gap in the Guardians' knowledge. It had to be that. The ring couldn't be broken, could it?
"Flash, there's at least two alien compounds in here that shouldn't be found on Earth and a third that my ring has no idea what it is. I think we just found something that shouldn't exist, buddy."
