Myst Costume: Honestly, this is a work in progress. A major one at that. There isn't anything special about this costume, not really. Outside of it being one of the few things that can shift with her when using her powers. She had to get some help with that, though, finding the right chemicals to temper it with in order to make sure that, when she started to go all smokey, her body would think it was apart of her and make it go smokey with. Actually, while the red wig she wears isn't necessarily apart of the costume, it's tempered with the same stuff. It's a bit different if she's just going partial smoke, though, rather than smoke cloud. The chemical solution used was something her Aunt Pamela had helped her with when she was young and her powers were starting to develope for her other clothes. The plus side, it tends to smell rather nice, like a sweet perfume. The downside? Most of her clothes, especially this costume, have to be washed by hand and hung to dry (or dry cleaned) rather than go through the wash. And one of those things is just a tad bit out of her paygrade.
Cameras: Nothing that i am going into great detail about, being a photojournalist, photography plays a big role in her life. And, considering that's the case, she has a large range of cameras for different things. She has a literal shelf (or three) on the bookcase in her room dedicated to all if her cameras.
Laptop: She also has a special laptop customized to hold a great deal more gigabytes of data and the like for her articles and images. It's also equipped with various photo editing programs, as well as video editing programs.
Jimmy'sDanger Signal Watch: Given to her by her father, this watch is quite special in that, pressing a button on it's side sends a special signal our to Superman (or, at least, it used to send a signal out to Clark Kent) and, usually, was used when he was in trouble. Now, she doesn't really use it for that, but it's her favorite momento from her dad.dada
Powers:
Smoke Mimicry You may wonder why she has powers of any sort to begin with. It's been proven in the past that non-mutants can give birth to mutants. Being thay Harley's own physiology was mutated (by Ivy, none the less), it seemed to have lead to her daughter being born a bit... different. But what exactly can she do? Well, she has the ability to manipulate her body and make it 'mimic' the aspects of smoke. This can be done in two different ways. The first way gives her a slightly smokey appearance, allowing her to manipulate how far she can reach and the like while still being (mostly) tangible. The other aspect is a full body smoke mimicry that makes her semi-intagible and able to move freely as a grey-ish smoke cloud. She cannot pass through walls, however, and when a strong wind is blowing, it is hard to control the way she moves. She can still see and speak, however. This is rather useful when she needs to squeeze through a tight hole or crack that seems humanly impossible to pass through. This smoke can be deadly, however, as if she really wanted to, she could enter someone's airways and suffocate them. Thankfully, though, she's not a muderer. And even if she did that, her DNA would be inside of the person. She cannot shift into a full smoke form and keep her clothes unless the clothes are tempered with either special chemicals or are tight enough. The chemicals used, like stated above, trick the body into thinking the clothes are apart of her body, like an extra layer of skin, and allows for a much easier time to shift with it. She's sure if she tried hard enough, she could shift with her untempered clothes. But, honestly, it would probably take ten times the amount of energy to do so.
Typhokinesis: Outside of just the smoke mimicry, she also has smoke manipulation. She can draw from already present smoke, steam, clouds, mists, and even the moisture in the air to create and control smoke and mist. In essence, she can control condensed visible gases to move and do as she wants. And, depending on the gas, that's more useful than you'd think. It should be noted the farther she tries to pull these visible gases from, the more energy it takes and it can start hurting, giving her nose bleeds and headaches. Honestly, cigarette smoke is the easiest to manipulate. After that, she starts having issues. Funny how she has the more complicated power down but the one that should be easier leaves her weak and drained.
Skills:
Olympic Level Gymnast: More so something her mother had gotten her to take when she was in middle school, Emily eventually grew to love it and had practiced from middle school up until even today, actually. From her training in gymnastics, if she really wanted to, she could likely compete at thr olympic level. Though she doesn't care to, it's just fun. Gymnastics have made her dexterity, reflexes, flexibility, and agility all at it's peak.
Above Average Athlete: Along with gymnastics, in order to keep in shape, Emily used to practice like an actual well rounded athlete with strength, stamina, and other sorts of training. While not nearly being close to peak levels, she is in excellent shape and is in above average physical condition for a normal person. However, she's also somewhat of a klutz at times which really negates that.
Professional Photographer: Considering she works as a photojournalist for a living, photography is something she js an expert of, on a professional level. She can take crisp, clear pictures of almost anything from practically anywhere.
Knowledge of the Psyche: Considering she is minoring in Psychology so that she has a career to fall back on, as well as taking elective psych classes in high school, she has a rather good understanding if how the human mind functions, her primary focus being on personality disorders. She used to live in constant fear that she might someday lose her mind, that it might be hereditary. Considering everyone and their mother knows what had happened to Harleen when she was younger with the Joker. The irony here is, while she has this knowledge, some if which is good enough to mimic some of the symptoms to things like bpd or did, when she puts up those ruses for too long, she gets lost in it. The prime example of this being the 'fake personality' that is Karen.
Above Average Chemical and Botanical Knowledge: She considers both of these skills to be one in the same, really. As, at least the area of botany she was taught in, dealt more with the oils and how they chemically interact to create compounds and the like. Pamela had helped immensely with this, as did taking a few chemistry classes. She wouldn't have really cared for this knowledge if it didn't help with her powers, though.
Basic Hand to Hand: She has taken self defense classes and some beginner boxing and tae kwon do classes, which help with fighting. Most of these are still pretty basic, however, but they do tend to help a bit with the whole amateur vigilante thing.
Professional Writer: Being a professional photojournalist, writing has always been as big of a hobby as photography has been and leads to her having a rather extensive vocabulary as well as a rather creative mind. As far as typing what she writes is concerned, she can type about ninety words a minute.
Surprisingly Talented Actress: She used to be a member of stage crew in high school, dreaming of being in the actual plays and musicals. When most people were already heading home and she was doing last minute fixes and clean up. And she would find herself going to the stage and acting out her favorite scenes. And, you know what? She was pretty good. The drama instructor would often as her to please audition, but Emily just couldn't. This acting helps with her thing with personality disorders, though she doesn't seem to use it for much else.
Weaknesses:
1.) I make up diseases regularly - Emily, surprisingly enough, was a normal child even for one raised by Harleen Quinzel. Even though she was brought up around so-called Villains (to Jimmy's utter dismay), she doesn't have anything actually wrong with her. Yet her best way of helping to boost her confidence, as well as to have a little fun on occasion, is to mimic the symptoms of mental disorders like she has them. Usually this is done in private, however, the thing about these acts, often done while in the ruse of Karen Quinzel, is that she can get so into them that she has trouble switching right out of them right away. She likes to say it's because she's just that method of an actress, but that's probably not true. What she fears is that, when she gets stuck in these little moments, that she might get stuck for good. Yet she likes doing it because it partially helps her feel like she can be someone else. She likes to think of it as a crazy little quirk. The less quirky and more crazy part, though, comes in her next weakness.
2.) Hey Mistah, she's my Sistah! - Ever since she was a little girl, she had gone about adopting a second faux personality. Now, let us make this clear right now, she does not have disociative identity disorder and she is not genuinely crazy, or at least, it didn't start off that way. While Emily Olsen was a mostly mild mannered and even somewhat timid girl, when she put on that wig and looked in the mirror, she always felt more confident in herself. She didn't feel like Emily, and that was good! No, instead of Emily, she gave herself a second name, because the confidence she exuded just wasn't her own. This side was named Karen Quinzel and, usually when asked why Emily was dressing up like that, she would joke and say that they mixed her up with her sister. And it used to be cute, used to be a joke, just a way to help boost her esteem, until it started to seemingly take a mind of it's own. Quite honestly, Emily's not entirely sure if 'Karen' is still even an act and not a different person entirely. Her occasional lapses in memory after she puts that wig on is just one sign of that to her, but the notes she occasionally finds are a bigger one. But she's not crazy. She's been tested.
3.) What did we do last night? - Like i mentioned above, Emily can't always remember what happens anymore after she puts that wig back on. This isn't an everytime problem but it's becoming a frequent one. And that kind of worries her. Considering it's as Karen that she dons the moniker Myst. Emily is no hero, after all, she's just a tad bit too timid for that. But Karen? She can do anything! But what Emily fears is that she could do anything. There's no way she wants to walk up one morning to find out she unknowingly killed someone because things got too messy while Myst was out on patrol. Not that she really thinks that would happen, but it doesn't mean it's not something she can't fear. The other issue, though, is she also doesn't want to stop being a masked hero.
4.) The Myst just won't clear - As much as she fears what might happen if Karen loses control when she's out being Myst, she also can't seem to bring herself to stop. When she does have a fraction of control, she loves thrill of it. Being a hero makes her feel so alive! How could she stop that? Alternatively, she might lose herself. She's not sure if that's a trade off she really wants to make but, right now at least, the adrenaline seems to be enough for her to keep it up.
5.) Please stop calling me Birthday Girl - With her smoke mimicry, she can't always seem to shift her clothes with her body. Meaning, unless she's wearing her specially tempered things, when she shifts into smoke, she loses her clothes. Which is all fine and good until she wants to shift back. And then, well... she hasn't mastered the art of slipping her gaseous form into her clothes to shift back into them. I'll leave it at that.
6.) I really hate wind - When she's in her smokey form, strong gusts if wind or things like fans can 'scatter' her, so to speak. This is not only somewhat painful to her but it also makes it harder to pull herself back together again, meaning she's stuck as a cloud until she can completely gather all of her smoke back into one cloud or wisp.
7.) Air tight seal - Alternatively, if her oxygen is cut off, slowly her body forces it to pull back together and painfully becomes human again.
8.) I can't see it! D: - When it comes to manipulating smoke and gases, there is one big rule. It has to have a physical form. So long as it's visible, no matter for what reason, she can manipulated it. But if it doesn't take a physical form, she can't really manipulate it. Outside of when she makes her own mist or fog, she has to be able to physically see the smoke and the like to use it.
9.) It's my monthly extisential life crisis - Emily, though a mutant, is also human and if she suffers from fatal wounds, she will die. She is also deathly afraid of death, actually. Well, Emily is, not Karen. She occasionally goes into this moments where she's just thinking "Someday, i am going to die. We are all going to die. Oh god, I'm gonna die!" And from there, mini panic attacks. They're not usually too terrible at least. Just... a bit more often than they should be.

THE REST
Personality:
Emily isn't that complicated a girl. Or, at least, she doesn't think of herself as such. Emily herself has always been more mild mannered than anything. Occasionally soft spoken, she doesn't always seem to get much of a say in, even when she's trying to because she doesn't want to interrupt people. And when she does, she is very apologetic for what it. Polite and raised up to display good manners, her and rudeness tend not to mix. Because of that, she also doesn't like to say anything with sarcasm, not really. And on the rare occasions she is sarcastic, it's usually in more of a joking manner, her trying to make a friend laugh or to tease them. Even when something isn't necessarily her fault, she is known to apologize, not minding taking the blame for someone else's blunder. It's probably the only time she actually lies. Her lies are never good, though, having a bad habit of starting to stutter slightly, play with her hair, and fidget a bit. And, usually, she's caught in those little lies easily but if she's taking the blame for someone, there usually seems to be a good reason. A total sweet heart to most she meets and, while she's not the most confident of person when she's talking to people and trying to be truly sociable, when she's out in the field to do interviews, take pictures, and prepare articles, it's like a butterfly just bursts out of her cacoon. It's where she really shines and what little confidence she gets from the Karen side of her comes through.
Karen is a mask if sorts, an alter ego, if you would, that Emily had created. Really, Karen is just whoever Emily wishes she could genuinely be. She used to use Karen to privately act out different psychological issues, a personal way to study. At best, she would do it with friends in her psych classes to help them identify different disorders and the like. The only issue was when she started, sometimes she couldn't stop for a while. So she did it sparringly, but always as Karen. Karen, in and of herself, is a demonstration of a disorder to begin with. Disociative Identity Disorder (once known as Multiple Personality Disorder). The only real problem is that Emily thinks Karen might be becoming an entity all on it's own. Or she's begun repressing the memories of her other side. When she first create Karen, she did so in order to give her a bit of a confidence boost. And it had always worked. As Karen, pretty and red haired, she can let loose. She is more confident, more outgoing, and less afraid of what everyone thinks of her. She isn't afraid to let herself be heard and, while mostly polite, she isn't nearly as polite as Emily is, nor does she constantly apologize for everything. Karen used to be her way to get more confidence as a kid and, now, Karen primarily serves as a means of a second secret identity to hide who Myst really is. She can be occasionally volatile but she doesn't really care if she could get into big trouble being a Vigilante. Karen is more sporadic, more spontaneous. And, quite honestly? She seems to occasionally be a bit unstable, especially when she gets made. Where Emily can grin and bare it, Karen tends to lash out a bit more. And as Karen seems to becoming more and more of her own person rather than just an Alter Ego, the more subtly unstable she gets. It's pretty lucky she's got high morals in the 'fighting for justice' area, though even then, her morals lie a bit in the grey.
History:
Emily's story begins soon after Melody was born. Harleen started to realize the kind of life she was leading was a dangerous one and, quite honestly, she knew she had to change. While she had put her first daughter up for adoption, it was an open one. While she didn't want to interfere with Melody's life, she occasionally got updates as to how she was and that is all Harleen could ask for. After signing herself into a psychiatric center, she spent a few months in in-pantient programming before she was let back out with a couple of prescriptions to help her along the way. And one of the first things she did was take a vacation in Metropolis. Now, it wasn't the first time she had encounters with Jimmy Olsen. Actually, there had been a time where she had wanted to kill him. Another where she had dated him without his knowing he was in a relationship with Harley Quinn. The emotions had been genuine, surprisingly on both ends, but at that time, things had ended poorly. But when she happened on him while she was in a small cafe, after convincing him he didn't need to call a Superman to deal with a 'felon', she was able to convince him to just talk. She bought him coffee and a brownie and talk they did. She started with apology after apology for the past, assuring him that she was fine now. And, after that seemed to go rather well, they set up another small 'date', as friends (or, rather, acquaintances) to talk again. He showed her around Metropolis, talked a lot about their hobbies, interests, just genuinely getting to know each other and everything was going great! And then, like these stories occasionally do, one thing led right to another.
Harleen, after beginning to officially date James for a few months, a little over half a year at the most, found out she was pregnant. Again. And she panicked. What if she would be no good as a parent? And what had been meant to be a few weeks vacation turned into so many months, she wasn't sure what to do. Out of fear, mostly, she went back to Gotham, only leaving Jimmy an apology letter. She hadn't expected him to come find her back in Gotham to get an understanding of just what was going on. She hadn't told him it was because she was having a child in her letter but when faced with physical confrontation, it was all she could say. And, to her utter surprise, he decided to stay at her side through it. She argued, asked about what the Daily Planet would do without him, he argued back that what would become of the child if it didn't grow up with both parents? So he resigned from the Daily Planet and got a job at the Gotham Gazette and, a months later, Emily Nicole Olsen was born.
While he had never been too enthused about his daughter growing up around known felons, Pamela's importance to Harley allowed for it. She grew up around Ivy and Jason and their daughter, though had never become the kind of friend with her as their parents before her. Most of Emily's time was spent by herself. It's what she preferred. And that time alone occasionally had her talking to an 'imaginary friend' she called Karen. Karen was bold, she was courageous, she was outgoing. She was quite literally the person Emily wished she could be but knew she couldn't. She was just too mild, just too soft spoken. But that childhood imaginary friend stayed with her in some rather wild ways as she got older.
It was when she was in middle school. She had joined the drama club to help as stage crew and, one day, going through costumes and organizing them, she found a wig in vibrant red that just spoke to her. Long straight locks, gorgeous, and for a school costume piece, it was rather well made. And putting it on felt so great. She felt horridly guilty about what she did next but she stole thr wig, nervously lying a few days later that it must have gotten lost or one of the kids must have accidentally brought it home. When she was at home, by herself in her room, she started to wear the wig and while Karen the imaginary friend was gone, Karen Noelle Quinzel, Emily's alter ego, was born. It was a joke at first. Someone she would only be when she was at home. Her mother and father were the only two who knew at first. Harleen was sure it was just a phase and, like any good psychologist, made sure to keep explaining to Emily that she just needed to be herself.
She was twelve when she learned she had powers. She had had a terrible day at school, bullied, hit a bit, and just completely humiliated. She was crying and crying and crying, locking herself into her room. The more distraught she was, slowly, the less of her there was. She was slowly turning into smoke and her clothes seemed to fall away. She hadn't noticed herself but by the time her mother came in to check back up on her, all there was left of her was a room filled with thick smoke and airy sobs. Harleen nearly had a panic attack, calling Jimmy in and, well, it took quite a bit for them to get herself together again, after her parents stopped panicking themselves. And, when Emily was all calmed again, slowly the smoke pulled back together into the young blonde. It was soon after that, as it kept happening and her clothes kept not turning to smoke with her that Harleen herself ended up talking to Ivy about helping her create something that could help Emily. They had to experiment quite a bit but, eventually, they got something down that could be used on the clothes that seemed to chemically interact with her smoky form and actually allow for it to shift with. Pamela even taught Emily how to make it, as well as quite a bit about different plant oils and their uses.
At fourteen, when she was going to apply for an internship at the Gotham Gazette, the Battle happened. Neither of her parents participated in it, but three quarters of her godparents participated and she watched in horror as they all were killed. The fact that heroes and villains alike could work together was an inspiration to her, though, and probably part of what would someday inspire her to become a hero herself. But at that time, it was all devastating. Gotham no longer felt right and, after Emily completed her school year, they moved to Metropolis.
It was in Metropolis that Emily started going out publically as her alter ego and, the friends she did have, always enjoyed it. Said it was a delightful quirk and thought she was a lot more fun as Karen than she was as Emily. After school wad spent interning at the Daily Planet, where her father managed to get a job at again, eventually making editor. The older she got, though, she started to realize that maybe having and 'alter ego' was a bit immature. So she hung up her wig for a few years. Graduating high school, she got a full time job at thr Daily Planet to help pay for college. She was an english major, minoring in psych. But Karen always seemed to remain right under the surface. Harley was able to get her liscence back and opened a private practice in Metropolis, where she finally got married to Jimmy after all thosr years.
The newest thing to happen in her life was a year ago when she finally decided that, she had this sweet power, she needed to do something with it. But she was too scared to do it herself. However, Karen wasn't afraid. She wasn't afraid of anything. And, though she's an amateur, for the last year, as Karen, she became the vigilante hero known as Myst. Balancing so much in her life wasn't nearly as hard as one would think, everything seemed to work out spendidly! And it wasn't like she was going out every night! Just occasionally. Karen, though, has slowly been coming out more and more, like she's becoming a real second personality, which is kind of terrifying, but she knew she had to deal. Everything would be okay, it had to be, after all! ... Right?

Emily honestly didn't remember much of the night before. Actually, she didn't remember a single moment of it. Which was becoming regrettably more frequent than she wanted to admit to. There was an alarm buzzing in her room, but she didn't hear it. It wasn't until her cell phone started to ring loudly on her desk that she woke up. A bit lazily, she reached over to grab her phone, eyes still closed, and answered it. "'Ello? Emily speakin', can i help ya?" she half muttered.
The sound of her father on the other end asking where she was gave her a start and she sat straight up. "Shoot! What time is it?!" There was almost a panic in her voice as she looked at her clock. 10:30 in the morning. "Shoot shoot shoot! Alright alright! I'm up! I'll be there in ten. Twenty tops! I am so sorry dad! I didn't mean to over sleep!" And, though Jimmy was trying to tell her it was all alright, she kept apologizing for the next three minutes as she scrambled out of bed and got ready. She didn't bother making her bed, though she grabbed the red wig and the mask she seemed to have lazily fell asleep in away in her special hidey spot before getting dressed, grabbing her camera and bag, and running out the door. "I'm on my way right now! Love you dad! See you soon." After she heard him return the farewell, she slipped the phone into her pocket and began to run.
She practically ran the whole way to the Daily Planet. Thankfully, it wasn't actually all that far away from her apartment complex. Dammit! She forgot to say bye to Freud and Sigmund! Momentarily, she felt bad, and it seemed to be something better to focus on than what had happened the night before. She wished she had had the chance to make sure her pets had enough food and water, but she was usually on top of that. Nothing to really worry about. It was just something to think about. Coming up on the front steps of the Daily Planet building, she started to slow, checking her watch. Eleven minutes. That was pretty bad for her, actually. She knew she could do so much better than that but she didn't have the time to linger on it as she made her way up to where her 'office' was. Her father eyed her from his office and she put on a smile, giving him a thumbs up. And, though he was shaking his head, she could see his smile. That was what mattered. Taking a few deep breathes, she went to where she usually worked, setting her bag down to the side. "Alright, Emmy. Had a bad start, but we can pick this up! You got this!"
